Chapter 4
Opposition and Plots

2. March, 1936

“.. And at last I say, when you give your vote in the upcoming elections, then do it for Costa Rica! Do not give them to sycophantic fools seeking only but personal glory, threatening to destroy the very foundation of Costa Rica!” Otto Cortes Fernandez, greatest rival of El Presidente, headed the Conservative Party without remorse. As soon as news reached him of the two years plan, he had been quickly out criticize from its very beginning.

249301268_d363c87f06.jpg
“This man disgust me Victor.” It was El Presidente, in his office listening on radio with his friend and minister of security, Victor Sanabria Martinéz. “He have no understanding of the greater picture.”

“Indeed Señor Presidente,” he nodded in agreement “my reports show nothing but support for your ideas. Even though many is blinded by this Fernandez, it is still obvious many are grateful for this opportunity to work. Garcia are doing his work well.”

“If so is, I must think of an award for him. But the two years have still not come to an end, must God have mercy with his pity soul should he fail!” more talk from the radio made El Presidente smash his fist into the table “I hate these conservatives!”

“.. and Fernandez hope through this declaration to make it clear for the Costa Rican people; this project is the one of a madman, doomed to fail from its very start. Now, if you do like me, support Fernandez, support Fernandez and save Costa Rica!” the radio was not treating its owner well.

“Is their entire policy about criticizing me? All they say is what I do wrong, but at least I try to do something.” El Presidente’s face made up an sad expression “I am getting to old for this.”

“Do not worry Señor Presidente, the people are with you. As with last election I am confident our party will get an overwhelming support, this Fernandez is desperate after something that can give him support, making him willing to say and oppose everything as long as he believe it strengthen his position. He is nothing but a liar.” Martinéz lowered his voice “and if you would be interested my department could try to, you know, well get rid of him. I you understand what I mean.”

But El Presidente was not listening at all anymore to Martinéz. All his attention was focused on the radio, which managed to turn his face first from purple and further to increasingly darker red. “.. It has furthermore reached our ears rumors of that Señor Oreamurio are willing to do whatever possible to make this plan of destruction come through. We have from a reliable source that he is planning to repeat the mistake of so many other Costa Rican presidents, selling away what we have left of banana production to the Americans. Indeed I can assure you, a vote for Fernandez is the only thing which can stop this!”

…….

“Victor, get me Garcia. NOW!”

El Presidente is living up to his stereotype well; absolute intolerance of any political rivals. Wouldn't his life be so much easier without the hassle of having to rig elections, all the work of counting the votes of dead men and dogs?

He should listen to Martinéz and just jump straight to bumping off his rivals, it would save him a great deal of worry and effort. :D

Chapter 5
Artillery and Treason

14. March, 1936

”FIRE!”

In an inferno of explosion and fire, another shell was fired, missing it’s desired location once more. Tinoco was not pleased with the situation, he was proud of the Costa Rican military and would not accept defeat. In his mind being defeated would equal to betray one’s country, which he as a patriot would do everything within his power to avoid.

If this had been a real battle, he though, the bad performance of his proud artillery could be vital. New artillery might be good yes, but his crew needed far more experience before they could put these new heavy pieces into proper use.

He yelled at the man responsible sightning the artillery, “You useless heap of crap, my grandmother shoot better than that! If we even bring you against the Americans, the entire world will laugh of us!” Before he gave the man a kick in his rear, dangerously threatening his ribs to be broken. “Next!”

The next one didn’t do much better either. The American scarecrow still stood there brave and fearless, avoiding shell after shell from his incompetent crew. But he should teach them, oh yes he should. Even he would have to break every rib within miles range.

“General, you must come immediately!” called some messenger from behind. Tinoco turned around “This better be important Sergeant, I am busy.”

“El Presidente himself have asked for you, you should hurry!”

* * *

As the President’s aide opened the door for him, General Tinoco entered the office in which there were only but two persons. El Presidente himself and his new favorite Martinéz. They were both welcomed him with a deeply serious attitude. The confused Tinoco saluted them both with a military gesture, wondering what all this could be about.

“General, you have any idea why you have been called in here?” Ah, yes he knew. El Presidente probably had got to know of his artillery’s bad performance. This was probably about taking away his direct command of the armed forces, giving it to this Baptista E. Gutierrez. It was common knowledge in the High Command this man was a genious in the use of artillery. “I might have some idea El Presidente.”

“ Really?” Now the Presidente looked a little surprised, but quickly got back his grave mine. “I have my doubts in that. This is about some top secret reports having found its way to my office. Martinéz, may you explain him?” Martinéz put his eyes into Tinoco’s putting up a devilish grin, like a hyena sighting a lion approaching it’s victim.

“I am confident General, you know of Señor Otto Cortez Fernandez?” Tinoco nodded, wondering if this could have anything to do with the personal struggle between the families of Oreamurio and Fernandez. However, even though Tinoco saw himself as to good to meddle with their political wrestling, showing lack of support of El Presidente Oreamurio could do nothing but harm. “Of course I know him, the scum of the earth.”

“Indeed General, and a traitor as well.” Raising his right eyebrow, Tinoco gave him a skeptical look. “for indeed did my agents discover some quiet suspicious documents.” Martinéz handed Tinoco a folder, with the letters “TOP SECRET” printed above.

Tinoco red through, and as he did, his face turned more and more surprised. “This is high treason!” he stuttered turning to El Presidente. “Are you sure these documents are real?”

Now it was El Presidente’s turn to give Tinoco a skeptical look. “Of course, Martinéz himself have guaranteed for their validity. Or would you put question marks on the analyzes of a minister of Security appointed by me?” Tinoco felt uncomfortable, “No El Presidente, of course El Presidente.”

“Now listen, Fernandez got many friends. I want you to get him put for high court, no matter what cost. If anyone oppose the authority of the law, show no mercy, do not hesitate with using force. Use the artillery if you want. General, I give you three days from now.”

“Yes, Señor. As you want El Presidente!”

El Pip - Why would you even think of El Presidente as such man? He win the election because the people love him :) And because Fernandez is "a veri bad man." He is just a nice fella wanting to take care of his people.

And about bumping of rivals.. errhm.. well..

Balkanite - That's the spirit :D

Ahhh getting other to do his dirty work, I had under-estimated El Presidente's devious cunning.

Good to see this one back and on proper banana dictator form! :D
