While my game last night shows that even if I fully optimise buildup for Sweden, I am locked to about 50 divisions, even with total war recruitment laws.

However... Rockets and Nukes are not anywhere near balanced yet.. But its damn fun to start an invasion against an unholy alliance of Nazis and Commies with reigning down 20 nukes on all major troop concentrations. and then another wave a few weeks later when my armies have advanced..

txlM1kh.jpg

But no, being able to build 250 nukes by 1947 as Sweden should not be possible after next week. (At least not after Wednesday mornings MP test....)

Do your named generals have unlimited range for the size of the sphere of influence that they control (ie can a named general control units in Asia as well as units in Europe) or is there a limit to the distances that divisions under a named general can be from each other?

Why shouldn't it be possible for nations like Germany? Aleast an achievement for having your faction ruling the whole world should be possible.

Was there any way of them telling you had nukes?

I always thought that wasnt handled well in HOI. I mean if you see the Rocket Test Site go up, you know theyre going for it, but even as secret as it was, the entire world knew who was going after it, what they needed to make it, how close they were to it, when they tested it, where they tested it, and what kind of device it was.

Hitting heavy water plants, trying to intercept the bomb being delivered, hitting V rocket sites, smuggling scientists around the world, sabotaging engineering plants, this was all a part of the nuke game in real life.

In HOI you never really knew that the opponent had a plethora of nukes until you were being hammered by them.

And there was really nothing you could do to stop your opponent from building them, whereas, thats the whole reason tons of missions were launched against germany, both commando, air strikes, and esponiage, to keep the Germans and then the Russians, from developing nukes.

In HOI its just sorta, oh hai there London has been nuked....oh, I guess thats why Germany has no uboats this game, they went for nukes. Doh.

Pretty immersion breaking.

And that if you went for nukes, they arrived on the same day, every single game no matter what. Since its just a matter of research point accumulation. If you find the most efficient path too them, they will always arrive predictably on the same day, every game, for the end of time.

Unless other nations can have some sort of influence over how long it takes someone to get nukes...the 1944-1945+ gameplay will be just as monotonous as the previous titles, or youre house ruling "NO NUKES!" every game.

Not to mention theyre not even remotely fun to use.

They just kill troops and destroy province improvements. Manpower and resources are fine apparently. No one cares that you use them. Theres no radiation to deal with. No international backlash. You wipe out every living soul in Asia and the UK will still be the US's ally. Your own people dont get upset. Its really a hollow experience and I dont even know why the nukes are in the game at all.

There were only two of them in the war.

There were two Railroad guns too, I doubt those will be included.

Nukes are seriously a really hollow game device, and made even more hollow, by the fact that theres nothing to them other than erasing stacks of units.

Which is not how anyone ever used them, or would use them. Thats ridiculous. It was with years of speculation, and heavy, heavy hearts that they were even used at all, to prevent a specific thing.

In Hearts of Iron, dropping a nuke is like omgsocasualfun that you do to lulztroll your opponent, or when you get bored in single player. Theres no emotional connection to it, and it doesnt even fit the time line. The whole reason the US nuked the cities it did, was because thats where teh Japanese synthetic industry was. They werent trying to obliterate the Japanese, or even destroy their leadership, they just wanted them to surrender without losing millions of lives in an invasion, and to prevent a soviet invasion.

That entire dynamic will be lost on "omg I Nuked London! now I win!"

Yeah thats not how that works...smh.

Glad to see at least theyll be restrained. Hopefully.

I mean, lets say the Germans "what if" developed a Nuke.

Targets for it would be like...Ramsgate, Manchester, Leeds, some place meant to make the British think "what if they hit London" not that theyd ever hit London. You need people left to surrender to you. You need their government to keep the trains running when you win. The Germans wouldnt even have nuked Moscow. Theyd have hit Gorky or something industral meant to make them capitulate.

Nuclear weapons are political weapons.

Not tactical weapons.

If you dont model that nuance. Why even have them :(
