So, using Road to '56, I played an unusual game of HoI IV. I pretended the assassination of Hitler and subsequent full replacement of the German gov't with a democracy happened. (used political power cheats to boost democracy support for a November 39 coup) I reasoned, that even though the Germans went democracy, that they would have still had to conquer Poland, France, and England because the Allies would have never agreed to a white peace with a restored full size (1914 border) Germany. They would have done the same thing they did with the Treaty of Versailles, or at least, Germany would have refused to take another fall like that. The post Polish/German Axis included Turkey, Ireland, and Netherlands.
So, after Sea Lion, which took an extra couple of years, the fascist Axis members left the alliance, and some former Allies joined Germany. Japan attacked USA, and USA asked for my help, and so the Axis went to war with Japan, which puppetted all of China by this time. The fascist states in Europe joined Japan, and I had to subdue Italy, Romania, Hungary, Lithuania, and Spain before sending panzer divisions to Asia. When the allies had a bridgehead, I sent the panzers into Japan and beheaded the fascist alliance.
But not before the USSR declared on the Finns and Latvians, to which the now independent Raj joined them. When Japan fell, and China, Korea, and Thailand were liberated, China, having no divisions at all, joined the Finnish alliance, and proceeded to get stomped by the Russians. The Finns were holding their own admirably, and the Russians got bogged down in Burma. During this time, I moved around all my divisions to the Eastern Front, along with all my aircraft, covering every sea zone around Europe, and stacked airstrips and planes all along the Russian border. I then justified on them, and was able to - by 1947 at this point - have the army of Germany's dreams! 60x30 with panzer divisions with a mix of 6 battalions of modern and medium tanks, armored arty, 2x armored AA, and 6 mechanized battalions backed up by 150ish 30 width foot infantry, 24 moutain and 24 marine divisions. Pitted against something like 800+ Russian divisions, some of which were fighting the Finns and Raj forces.
I attacked Russia, which while attacking other democracies, was not seen favorably by the Axis democracies and I went it alone along our mutual border for awhile. (I later used cheats to bring the Finns, Raj, Latvia, and China into the Axis, because it didn't make sense that we were fighting two wars when the point of my attacking Russia was to save Finland and Latvia.) Anyway, this all lead to these screenshots, which were a lot of fun taking.
Conclusion, after these screenshots were taken, I took the rest of the Baltic states, and the rest of the Axis powers like Turkey, Netherlands, and USA declared on Russia. It was a matter of time for the USSR and didn't want to play more hours when I knew the Russians had not chance of recovering momentum. This was in a good part due to the fact that Russia hardly had any medium tanks - their division templates, like all the division templates of all my opponents other than infantry, which are okay by default, sucked donkey balls. I think Russia was the only one with ANY medium tank divisions (mind you, they started issuing medium tanks in 1948, and had hardly any built by the time I was running my modern armor over the steppes). If my opponents could build decent templates and fill them with useful equipment, I don't know if I could have achieved this kind of success.
Other sadness included when checking the research at the end of the game, I noticed the USA had only one level IV ship (carriers) and many of the majors hadn't even completed their doctrine trees - in most cases the land trees were okay, but air trees were neglected. I just can't believe the AI couldn't keep up with tech trees, at least with the other majors. Is Germany that stacked to begin with? Or is the AI that weak? I will probably have to buff my opponents next time I play a major.
