In the division designer, some support companies have a 'Reliability: +X%' stat that seems to vary depending on
1) the type of support company itself
2) the type of battalions in the division
3) the number of battalions in the division

What the heck is this stat, and what does it do? When I look at the Attrition details of a division deployed in the field, which shows the actual reliability of each type of equipment, I only see the base reliability (e.g. 80% for support equipment).

I've looked at the wiki, searched this forum and the wider intertubes, looking for answers, to no avail.

Following are some examples.

Motorized Recon has very high values, here a whopping +80% Reliability with 1 INF battalion:
1INF_MotRecon.png

Becomes +26.6% Reliability with 5 INF battalion:
5INF_MotRecon.png

Becomes +10% with 15 INF battalions:
15INF_MotRecon.png

Cavalry Recon with 1 INF battalion, +40% Reliability:
1INF_CavRecon.png

Same as above, but after adding ART Support Company, Cavalry Recon changes to +28.3% Reliability:

I notice that your 1 Inf template has a 0% reliability. So, recon adding 85% is just the average of 90% inf eq and 80% support eq.

But yes, the way it's calculated for 15 Inf templates is strange. Can you check what the template summary says for reliability?

Is there any Inf eq available in your stockpile?

No I had nothing in the stockpile, more like a deficit actually. I had started a Soviet Union 1936 game and didn't even unpause.
So I went back and filled the stockpiles, and made some new tests. I've updated the screenshots in the OP. Equipment is all Tier 1.

I still have no idea what any of these seemingly random reliability stats mean

All templates have 0 reliability to begin with. This doesn't happen when I create divisions, so I would figure that is our culprit.

Maybe try to put these Templates on the map and then check the stats change?

You mean the 'Reliability:' field in the Base Stats column on the right of the Division Designer? I only see a not-zero value there if I add a Maintenance support company.

Hmm, the plot thickens. At this point I should mention I have only the base game, no DLCs (except some cosmetic freebies given away by Paradox). I had a cosmetic mod, that I disabled just to make sure, but predictably that didn't change anything.

Using the Mountaineer division template that Soviet Union starts with:

Alright, looks like the reliability field actually only gives any unit related bonuses. Hence, only maintenance does change that. (Iirc, Field Hospital works the same, affecting trickleback and XP loss  d'oh!)

Then I am at a total loss what the support companies' tooltip refers to. I calculated average reliability for the 1xInf template, with or without support arty, numbers don't add up.

If you hover over the one support company that really gives reliability it shows:

2 times Reliability, with different number formatting, once -5% once +5% :D

I'd suggest to quickly forget that tooltip reliability and look at the stats on the right side.

Yes, I noticed that too. It's great, isn't it?

Okay... not really the answer I was hoping for :(

Any idea what it is, though? What on earth is the game trying to tell us?
