I do not think joining an alliance automatically gets you into war with the enemies of your new alliance-partners. It is an EU2-thing I think. You would still have to declare war on your own?

No, it's EU1 as well, but you only join the wars of the alliance leader, and the alliance joins none of yours. (IIRC
