I'm currently playing a Charlemagne game and things have been mostly problem free, apart from the common game crashing when I open the Chronicle. My current character is Byzantine Emperor and, last night, as the Halilids declared their umpteenth holy war on me, the game suddenly started chugging, the map very juddery as I scrolled around - almost as if the game was pausing and unpausing every half a second. Extremely frustrating. I saved the game and went to bed, and forgot all about it until I just loaded it up now. Still exactly the same, awful performance, whereas before the game always ran with no performance issues whatsoever.

I'm running version 2.2 on an i5 2500, 12GB of ram and a Radeon 7970 (Windows 7 x64). All drivers are up to date, but I don't think drivers are at fault here... I think the game's database has just become too much, maybe... I don't know. It's obviously something to do with the game and not the hardware or drivers. I can upload the save game if necessary?

I'm having the same problem I think. Game starts lightning fast and then after a saves it starts slowing to a crawl even at top speeds. And I also have an excellent computer.

Most definitely frustrating annoying. I think it is a memory leak

Hmm. Maybe. My current game year is in the 1040's, I think, having started back in Charlemagne's first year of 769. I don't recall having any such issue with playing from 1066 to 1453... unless it's Charlemagne specific which, going by the amount of bug reports, could be the likely culprit.

Can you please opt into the 2.2.0.6 beta, and the manually delete your documents/paradox/ck2/gfx/ folder.

If that doesn't help Please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the end of the "Sound devices" section for brevity) and your Documents/CK2/settings.txt. From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ directory, post system.log . Open setup.log in notepad and search for 'checksum', post that line only here too please.

I keep an eye on my gpu temperature all the time - in CKII it doesn't ever go beyond 45c (idle on the desktop it's 32c). My cpu temperature I check less regularly, but I have checked it plenty of times while running processor intensive programs and games, and there are no issues there. Besides, this performance problem is only with CKII, not with any other game, nor even with GameCube/Wii emulation over Dolphin, which is one of the most taxing programs out there for processors to deal with.

We have seen issues like this with realms stretching across half the world, if they get a civil war or other mass rebellions. But you haven't mentioned anything like that.

Well, I started out as an Irish earl and am now the Byzantine emperor, with the kingdom of Éire a part of it. The Halilids have taken a large stretch of what is today mainland Turkey, but otherwise things are stable. I did notice that it started to chug when the Halilids declared their umpteenth holy war... which is why I think the save is at fault. Should I upload it for you to take a look at, or would that not help?

I just ran Fraps and the frame rate is dipping constantly, from about 55 or so all the way down to 1 sometimes... I loaded the game, the campaign map came up, everything seemed fine. I unpaused, instant frame rate drops. Not sure what's causing that... no other game is having any issues (including EUIV which is solid as a rock).

AndrewT. I am having the same exact problem. My latest save game has grinded to a halt, and it seems as if the game is pausing and upausing constantly-that is how slow it feels when running at top speed. And there is no massive civil war or anything like that going on.

My instinct says its a memory leak.


This is not an isolated incident specific to one particular person.

Are we still out of luck?

Frame rate? I thought we were talking about speed of days passing and/or scrolling around the map?

What's happening in task manager, especially CPU usage?

I didn't know the frame rate was being affected until you asked, "What kind of numbers are you seeing?" - I assumed you meant frame rates, therefore Fraps, therefore seeing the frame rate dipping significantly. I just tried the game again, first with a slightly older save, and then with the current one, and monitored cpu load. This is what I saw -

Older save - 15% minimum, 34% maximum
Current save - 36% minimum, 51% maximum

That coupled with the frame rate dipping from it's usual 50's and 60's all the way down to one certainly shows that something is up - the dropping frame rates being the "chugging" and "the map is very juddery" that I mentioned in the op.
