Paradox is seriously underestimating the number of players who've been banking on this game running BETTER over time.

Bad Performance (Cornflake 1.5)

First thing you should always do when running into performance issues:
Go to documents/paradox/hoi4/ and open "settings.txt". Reduce max framerate to 40. I'm using that settings since the game came out and don't notice a downside:

Paradox did a good job regarding the generic ai-templates by adding a "big" version with width 40 to the regular width 20 one. It's tied to certain conditions, but at least the generic minors shouldn't be a problem anymore.
Regarding the majors: they still use small-ish templates of width 27 for infantry. Result: Germany has 400+ divisions during Barbarossa.
I dislike that and I think this division spam is a major contributor to the lag despite what the devs say. Furthermore the a.i. doesn't really perform better with a myriad of weak divisions.
Major mods like "Kaiserreich" and "Darkest Hour" have a much better frame rate than vanilla and in both mods, the a.i. uses a lot fewer divisions without being weaker. In "Kaiserreich" you even see dozens of wars simultaneously and the performance is wonderful.
Personally I mostly play the major mods. When I want a more vanilla experience, I use my own little mod which mostly increases template size and several minor tweaks which used to make a big difference, don't know how it is in 1.5.

lol, well, I assume if you mod you take the time to clean out old saves at some point. But with today's drives I don't even notice it. Not like the old days having to stack 10gb HDs to get enough room.
old days... I had a 10 mb HDD... when I started in IT as a set up tech I was installing 25MB hdd's....

Apple IIE baby, E for enhanced. 64 KB of memory, upgraded to 1 MB, and with the optional external 10 key pad. Damn that baby was hot, graphics up to 16 colors! Blew my first big bonus on it, $1199 on sale. Wizardry and The Hobbit were a hoot on it, wife was hooked on Tetris (still is).
Back to the OP. I am noticing a little more lag at the 2400 flip which is causing a slight slowdown from the start. I am going to chalk that up to better ai decision making. But the overall late game performance is sooo much better. Had to turn down a few graphics because with fixing the memory leaks that became noticeable. Can live without eye candy if it means 1943 will run faster than a garden slug.
Apparently everyone who's played for years is about to regret buying this game.
Well, on the bright side we all got to cheer for women's rights yesterday, whatever good that did for gaming.

Slower for me as well - doubt it's a system thing. Seems as though we've sacrificed some speed on the front end to give us better speed at the back end, which I'm not sure I'm totally with or not yet.
GPU's a GTX 970, 4GB - probably not the problem. Drivers were updated the week beforehand I think.

Yeah, I'm super upset that something I spent the equivalent of weeks on doesn't work anymore and the devs answer is "Well, sucks to be you." But what the hell am I going to do about it? No support groups for guys who've made do on crappy hardware for years.
odd ... you have better hardware than I and the speed of the game on my rig at home is fine...
umm.. while I do some software development for a living, that living is not in Sweden, nor working for PDS, I just be a forum moderator that has been in IT since the late 80's... before I was born cause there is no way I'm that old....
Aw C'mon m8, I've got nothing but love and joy in my heart, but I've spent, let's see... 998 hours... can we just go 1,000? 1,000 hours, 41 days, 5 weeks, over a month STRAIGHT playing this game until late 1950s.
Waking the tiger comes out and my FPS tanks, the entire game plays like I'm in a bowl of melted wax, and a dev tells me "Your specs sucks, this is part and parcel of living in an advancing society"
What else do you expect from me? The fact that I didn't start throwing out F bombs says a lot about my integrity.
