I just saw pretty bad EU review at the german website www.Gamespot.de ,I don't speak or read german so I don't know what their arguments were, but they still gave a weak score of 5.7 (AoE II got 8.7).

So my question is pretty much : What's the Deal?Could you Deutsh-speaking EU fans translate the review and tell us Yanks if they're right?

Thanks.

I can't help but wonder if those German mags haven't been fooled by the 'real time strategy' label. EU *is* real-time strategy, but all other so-called 'real-time strategy' games such as AoE2 are, in fact, low-level tactical games. Heck, sometimes I think AoE2 and its ilk have more in common with arcade shooters than real strategy games.
Having to plan your attacks a little just to avoid charging camels with cavalry does *not* make a game strategic.

Hmmm, many of those 'experts' writing Game reviews in germany are only interested in those 3D-High-Resolution-Super-Combat-Shooter-Games, no eye for real strategy... :(
They also think, that this - Build a Base, build troops, hit the enemy in a series of real shitty missions à la C&C is real Strategy, so there can be no objective Gamereview in Germany....
Roughly they critizise the 'miserable sound', the 'boring graphics' ( no 3D-Super-Action), the 'way too small city window', 'lousy land- and seabattle animations', no video-animations etc.
Sorry that I didn't translate the whole text, but my time is running short, right now.

Basically, from what I've understood from reading the review, the reviewer doesn't think it's enough like AOE2 or Red Alert or the like. He clearly has not understood that it's not even the same genre, even if it says 'RTS' on the box...

Die Deutsche Reviewers sind nicht so gut an diesen Art von Spielen...tut mir leid!

That's what they say:
EU got some good ideas, but there implementation is not very well.
Technically it's very weak and people who like good - looking and easy to learn games won't like it. On the other hand people who like classic strategy games will like it very much.

I have never understood what fun is the build-up-base, destroy-enemy type of games. Well, Starcraft had at least good story and no giant squids or dolphins. But basically they are all alike. Play one and you have played them all. Different types of units, different buildings, even different races, but basically it is all the same. Even if they put ultra-mega-super 6D graphics, they will be the same.
As for the EU... it is real-time, but it is much more complex than any other. Remember the 'diplomacy' system in AOE O) Grrrrrrrr.... But for the people who like to play standard RTS's, it might seem too difficult. So don't blame them, feel sad for them.

My problem with C&C/AoE RTS games was playing them I'd try and carefully build up my base- create the infrastructure for a successful warmachine. While I was doing that I'd get whacked by some lout on the other side of the map who was doing a 'caveman rush' tactic.

Ok, that may be true, but that's just a question of strategy. And still there are two options then: rush early or build up.

But i was thinking what would 3D graphics change in EU? You could rotate map... but what's the use? We are all used to standard world map, north up, south down? You can zoom in/out without that as well. It would just tax system resources and make developers do overtime to get that damn 3D engine to work. And as much i can see from screenshots, graphics look good enough.
