Badboy FAQ

This is a rewrite of the originally Badboy FAQ by Kurtbrian, I did little research on it. Comments?

Viewing your current badboy

Access the diplomatic screen. On top you see a wording of your badboy rating:
* Honorable = 0
* Respectable = 1-4
* Slightly tarnished = 5-8
* Tarnished = 9-12
* Rather bad = 13-18
* Very bad = 19-28
* Extremely bad = 29-34
* Dishonorable scum = 35-44
* Worse than dishonorable scum = 45-60
* Hated throughout the entire world = 61-100 and more...

If you hover over this wording for a few seconds something like 10/48 will popup. Here 10 is your current badoboy, 48 your badboy max. Badboy max is explained in the last paragraph.

Gaining Badboy

Declaration of War

0.000 Dow human, cb
0.667 Dow human, no cb, relations +100 or more
1.333 Dow human, no cb, relations less than +100
1.000 Dow AI, cb
2.000 Dow AI, no cb, relations +100 or more
4.000 Dow AI, no cb, relations less than +100
0 Dow pagan (only for Europeans)
+0 Dow truce
+0 Dow vassal

The Dow without CB may seem backward but there is less BB when relations are good.

Peace deals

The following are for provinces taken from the AI. When taking provinces from a human player, divide the following by three.

0 Gaining a core province
0 Gaining a trade post or colony
2 Gaining a noncore province, from a non-pagan nation, in an offensive war
1 Gaining a noncore province, from a non-pagan nation, in a defensive war
0 Gaining a province from a pagan nation (only for Europeans)
2 Gaining a noncore, from a pagan nation, in an offensive war (for non-Europeans)
1 Gaining a noncore, from a pagan nation, in a defensive war (for non-Europeans)
6 Force-annex a country of same religious group**
3 Force-annex a country of different religious group**
0 + 0 per province Force-annex a pagan country for non-pagan Europeans
2 + 0 per province Force-annex a pagan country for pagan Europeans
0 + 1 per province Force-annex a pagan country for Non-European non-pagans, excluding trade posts
2 + 1 per province Force-annex a pagan country for Non-European pagans, excluding trade posts
0 Force religion change
0 Force vassalization

Misc

1 Change religion peacefully
1 Hiring privateer (but there is only a 10% chance of getting the increase)
1 Diplo-annex a country per province (core and noncore) including colonies, excluding trade posts
2 Turbo-annexing* per province (core and noncore) including colonies and trade posts, also from pagan
0 Dishonoring your alliance
0 Gaining provinces through defection
0.25 Inheriting per province size of country (core and noncore) including colonies and trade posts

Inheritance badboy also includes provinces not gained in inheritance but going to another nation at war.
The warring nation controlling the province during inheritance gains the province at no badboy cost.

Losing Badboy points

0 Losing a core province in a peace deal
1 Losing a non-core province having a religion other than pagan in a peace deal
1 Losing a non-core province that has pagan religion in a peace deal
1 Losing a non-core trade post or a colony in a peace deal
0 Province defecting
1 Releasing a vassal per province (core and noncore) including colonies and trade posts
1 Nation declaring independence per province (core and noncore) including colonies and trade posts
0 Releasing a pagan vassal per province (core and noncore) including colonies and trade posts
0 Pagan nation declaring independence per province (core and noncore) including colonies and trade posts

Additionally badboy will decrease at a certain rate depending on the current monarch's diplomatic skill and difficulty setting

Decline each month = DIP/Y

Where:
DIP = diplomatic skill of monarch
Y = 240 for very easy, easy and normal
360 for hard
480 for very hard

In table form the number of years it takes to decrease one BB point:

Code:
DIP	VH	Hard	Normal/Easy/Very Easy
11	 3.64	 2.73	 1.82
10	 4.00	 3.00	 2.00
9	 4.44	 3.33	 2.22
8	 5.00	 3.75	 2.50
7	 5.71	 4.29	 2.86
6	 6.67	 5.00	 3.33
5	 8.00	 6.00	 4.00
4	10.00	 7.50	 5.00
3	13.33	10.00	 6.67
2	20.00	15.00	10.00
1	40.00	30.00	20.00
0	 0.00	 0.00	 0.00
-------------------------------
-1	40.00	30.00	20.00
-2	20.00	15.00	10.00

Note: DIP is in the range of -2 to 11. If DIP is negative your BB will increase, not decrease, with time. In the table above you can e.g. see that on Normal and DIP skill -1 it will take 20 years to increase one BB point, with DIP skill -2 it will take only 10 years.

Badboy max

The badboy max is used for:
- Stability cost calculation, see economy FAQ for details.
- Only on very hard, BB wars occur when your BB is higher than BBmax. Every AI country that has a port and has their capital on the same continent as your capital plus countries that border you will DoW you within a couple of months provided other conditions are met. AI countries with an alliance with your nation, truce with your nation, current war with any nation, stability of -3, or no knowledge of your capital will not DoW. Christian Europeans do not invite allies to war against non-Europeans. In all other cases, the AI invites allies to war.

Tests show that the badboy cutoff factor does not increase linearly with time. In this graph the badboy cutoff is shown with time. There is not a real correlation between time and badboy cutoff, except that after 1789 it increase dramatically.

A rough formula for BBmax is:
BBmax = 30 + DIP + (current year-1419)*0.06

* Turbo-annexing: When you are at war with a country and the government of that country collapses, all provinces of that country you control at that moment will be owned by you, excluding the capital province..

** Religious groups:
christian: catholic, protestant, reformed, orthodox, CRC
non-christian: shiite, sunni, hindu, buddhism, confucionism
