I'm playing as Macedonia at the moment. I had hit the ground running at the start of the game, because I only had 3 provencies and everyone else was expanding.

So now I own about 11 proviences and really need to sort out my finaces. Anyways, I looked in the diplomatic tab and it said that I could get Sparta to pay me tribute. So I tried a few times and it didnt work. Im clearly the Super Power of Greece, but I cant get anyone to pay me tribute.

Should I go to war with them and force them to do so? But that'll make me a Bad boy. So what should I do?

The game is generally rather forgiving to badboy gain. Unless you already have a high one (above 5) you even should be fine outright annexing them. In such a case, the problem wouldn't be the accommodation of badboy, but rather the loss of stability.

Bad boy isn't really problem unless you go over your BB limit.

In 1.2 there is some bug that don't let you get tribute from nations that you completely occupy, as game thinks they can't afford to pay you anything. As Sparta is only one province in size it would mean that if you occupy them, game won't let you demand tribute from them, so I would prefer annexation.

Plus Sparta is poor! Annex all of the other Greek minors.

I think his question is about getting tribute from someone without having to declare war in general. It says u need to have at least a -150 rep with that country. I have no idea how the game determines if they will or won't accept a "Demand Tribute" from you. It always seem to fail even if I can stomp them under my boot easily. Strange, and unrealistic. If I own all of Greece and want to extort money from Crete or Rhodes, I don't think they'd say "no" so easily....

Are you making sure that the diplomat you are sending has "the skills to pay the bills?"
High Charisma, High popularity (and Loyalty?) helps IMHO.... also the silver tongued trait I think helps with diplomacy. I have had some people do the tribute through demand, but it takes a few tries.

I also think that the -150 in the relations is messed up. I should be if your relations are bad but not more that -150 then you can demand tribute.
(=/= > -150?)

(=/= > -150?)

I usually use the highest char diplomat as possible ... I think most of the time it's 8 or so. Does popularity really play a role in that??? I had no idea.

Yes I agree with the -150 relations. You should be able to demand more if you're on bad terms with them. Say anything less than -75 relations is fair I think. Also needs a balance modifier of comparative strength... so then a sly-toungued diplomat from Sparta won't be able to extort money from Macedon while Seleucids can't get money from Pergamon.....

wow,, i know what cops is, but it has no bearing on playing the game, although I give you props, for a very funny title..

In my personal opinion, its really a very bad show any way. People who happen to not know about it aren't exactly missing out, you shouldn't give them such a hard time about it. :)
