I figured out how to change my country options (thank you to everyone's help and patience). Now I started a game as the Aztecs and I cannot ascend the tech levels. Each time I discover Infrastructure 1 or some other advance, I am set back to 0 and I begin to research level 1 again.

Is this just to maintain historical accuracy? Why not allow for the Aztecs to dominate the Western Hemisphere and play a competitive role? Does this happen w/ all other minors I might select to play?

thanks again

PS - I appreciate the friendliness of everyone on this forum. I am addicted to EU and I want to get the most out of the experience. Everyone here is making that happen!

A final thought: I don't know how difficult it is to create a multiplayer, but I would really like to try to get that going with some people here...maybe it will take some forward planning succh as picking a time and place a few weeks into the future and testing the abaility of someone to host a game...
...give me your thoughts

I too played the Aztecs once, a very short game, it got boring because no one else was around. I wanted to build the Aztec Empire up and kick Spain's ass when they come into central america.

I think it may be because they are pagans. If you switch their religion in the saved game file you might notice some success in the tech levels.

You can't edit religions specifically in the game, i.e. what bonusses they give and such, at least not in EU1. HOWEVER, you can edit the religion of a province. You can do it either in the save game file, near the top where all the province technical info is stored, like native ferocity, and tax value. OR, you can edit the province.csv file to give different religions to various provinces.

Whenever I played as China, I liked to change them so a state religion of shiite and change all the provinces as well. You can also change their tech group to muslim instead of exotic to get those quicker tech advances.

Some pagan nations (Inca, Aztec, Iroquis) are just destined for dark ages (dunno why, Aztecs were at their pinnacle of influence and power when the Spanish came). Really boring to play but you can advance after 5 wars with european powers...(whiteman value):)

What does that mean - do your research investmens start to accumulate like in all *normal*nations? Or do you automatically advance one level?

I'll just go find that thread...hmmm... I can't find it. Oh well...

Whiteman value makes you able to do stuff like build cavalry and I think you can start to increase in technology after that. Not positive but that's what I think it is.
