Just to make it clear, I really like the idea behind this new DLC, and though I do like my games to be historically feasible, a bit of madness like a massive Aztec horde crossing the ocean doesn't hurt if it's optional. I'll probably try it out a few times, it's only £5.

I also understand that Aztecs were chosen to be the invaders because someone suggested it on these forums. What I'm wondering is if anyone suggested a Chinese Invasion DLC which, in my opinion, would have been a more sensible and more interesting alternative.

The Chinese had explored much of the African coast by the end of the second millennium. They also knew that Europe existed, whereas the Aztecs, obviously, did not, nor would they have had any conceivable motivation to sail across the ocean if they had miraculously discovered the means to do so. If you think about it, in 1066 (or any starting date in the eleventh or twelfth centuries) the chances of the Chinese empire trying to create a maritime colonial empire probably aren't much lower than the chances of a central Asian tribe one day carving out the largest contiguous empire in history in the space of a few decades. If anything the chances of the former happening instead of the latter were probably greater. The keyword here is instead. A Chinese Invasion DLC could add an element of unpredictability: you could have a Mongol Invasion from the east, or Chinese colonization from the west (or the south, along the coasts of Africa), but not necessarily both. Or an invasion may not occur at all. You could even add the possibility of a Viking Invasion from Vinland, so that an invasion can occur from any corner of the map, but you never know which one.

Anyway, just thought I'd share that, seeing as I haven't see anyone else suggest it (I've been reading the forums for a while, just never really felt the impulse to post anything until now). I'm not really expecting paradox to make this, seeing as it would basically just be an alternative version of current DLC, but maybe a mod team will make it using the mechanics for the Aztec DLC (or the vanilla game, even, I don't really know how it would work).

It's a gameplay thing. You already have two massive invasions from the east so if you're going to add a new ahistorical invader, you want them to come from the west.

Technically you have three. The Timurids might pop up and sneak in behind the Ilkhanate.

There is a chinese invasion, only they're called "Mongols". Remember by the time the Mongols came this way, they'd already been that way and decimated large parts of china, and by the 1270s effectively ruled china as the Yuan dynasty.

True dat.

The Mongols made use of Chinese technology/engineers as well once they had subjugated them.

I know the Chinese were technically ruled by the Mongols from the late 13th century, but in a way that's my point. At the beginning of the game's timeframe the Chinese were not a purely land-based empire, and it is feasible that they could have created a maritime empire. If you looked at the state of the world in 1066 without any knowledge of what was to come, a Chinese maritime empire, including colonies (or attempts to colonize) in North Africa and Europe, is no less likely than an obscure tribe in central Asia one day forging the largest land empire in history in a matter of decades. It's certainly a lot more feasible than an Aztec invasion across the Atlantic, whilst providing a similar game mechanic.

Of course in the game we always predict that the Mongols will come at some point after 1200. I think it would be nice to add a level of unpredictability by introducing the possibility of an invasion from the south or west instead of an invasion from the east. You could do this in a historically plausible manner by having it so that, instead of the Mongols forging a land empire, the Chinese create a maritime colonial empire. Or both could happen, the Mongols could fail to conquer China whilst the Chinese expand overseas, not necessarily in that order.

I don't understand why some people are hostile to invasion DLC ideas. DLC's are optional. If it were a patch, I'd agree, don't do anything unless you can be sure it won't break the game for anyone, but this would just provide an alternative scenario which some people might find interesting. And as I said, I'm not really expecting this to be made into a DLC because a different Invasion-based DLC has already been announced.

Really I'm just giving my support to the idea of potential and unpredictable invasions from different parts of the map, and offering one such scenario which could work, for a DLC or a mod.

EDIT

P.S. I know there's a few joke threads inspired by the Aztec DLC petitioning for silly things like a zombie invasion. I'm sorry if I appear to be jumping on the bandwagon, that wasn't my intention.

How about just stopping with all this useless invasion DLC ideas, and try to invent something that integrates well with the game for once.

Like they're currently doing now, only it takes a lot longer than a new glorified horde with different portraits? I swear it's like people don't understand little work actually went into this thing besides the portrait designers (and to be fair it's not like the pagan DLC will add new portrait stuff anyway so).

aw cmon... it's a what if scenario... plus... Aztecs are cool. ;P
there isn't that huge obligation of plausible or not... it's "fantasy".

Haha, I know, I know. Again, I do kind of like this Aztec scenario, and I will try it out. But I'll probably only play it a few times, whereas if something more similar to a Chinese Invasion from an unpredictable part of the map (including the east - I'm using 'Chinese' in a very broad sense here) were introduced instead I would probably use it all the time, because for me that would both have the fun of being ahistorical as well as not breaking the immersion of historical plausibility, not to mention the added gameplay feature of not knowing which side of the map is going to be hit by a giant invasion. Presumably the Aztec DLC won't have any effect on the Mongol Invasion mechanics, so with it you will still know that at some point there will be an invasion in the east, and at some point there will be an invasion in the west.

This is cool and all, but why does Central Europe get left out of the Invasion craze? Clearly we need Molemen DLC to attack Europe from underneath. And what about Merperson DLC to ravage the Scandinavian coasts?
