I decided to play as Aztec. Not sunset invasion Aztec, just plain old 'new world' tech group aztec. Went fine, admin did not level as fast I would like since most of my rulers had very high mil but low adm. So now it is about 1600. I have been coexisting with spain, england and portugal a while. Conquered the cherokee/creek/shawnee blob and spit it out as a vassal. I explored as far as Japan, Norway and Naples. However it seems to westernize your province must be adjacent via land. Which I did not know! Everything else works off the adjacent counts for 1 sea tile.
Anyways, it took me so long so figure it out that basically everyone went hostile to me despite my best efforts at keeping relations high and attempting to ally european powers. However the biggest issue seems to be I can NOT convert away from animist no matter how hard I try. I tried taking a catholic colony so I could incite a rebellion and accept demands to convert - but them being 10+ military tech ahead of me basically means I get rolled as soon as their transports show up.
