Is it possible for the U.S. to join the Axis alliance, and what are the ramifications of declaring war on countries if you are an Axis America?

Just wondering as my beleguard friends are having a tough time as the Axis countries (Yeah, hard to believe). My allied friend (UK) is unable to play any more so is it possible for the sleeping Giant to flex it's military muscle, or will the dissent kill me?

So if my WE is 100% and I join the Axis will i still get big dissent hits for attacking countries; no use in crippling the U.S. economy.

I'm not positive about this but I (think) as the USA you need to elect right a couple times to move yourself into the fascist political camp and have you're political leanings also be fascist in the "triangle" (to be able to have Germany ask you into the Axis). I could have been smoking bad fig leaves when someone told me that though.

Yes, the US can join the Axis - it has happened in our current game. The funny thing is that, after some unrest, a communist revolutionary (George?) is now the head of state but the US is still in the Axis. The US is now busy annexing all of central America and the Caribbean. They still have high levels of dissent but, bizarrely, the other players seem to regard this as a bug and are talking about editing the save to fix it. Given what's happened, I'd expect another civil war in the US.

Why not join Axis then ask the Axis players to declare war for you, since their dissent hits are nearly nonexistent?

Axis gets 2% +/- but your tactic really exploits game mechanics at the expense of the spirit of the game

As I mentionned in another thread there is potential here for a huge exploit ...

Consider: Germany and USA agree... Germnay goes on a dow spree Jan 1, 36 ... US WE immediately hits 100 .... US joins axis on Jan 2 36 (or ASAP) ....

The whole system of alliances should be restricted in MP...

For countires owned by players, I would say that

Only democracies may join allies
Only communists may join Commintern
Only right wing dictatorship may join Axis

Off course for countries played by AI, players could still influence them and bring them to alliance regardless of political system

Thanx everyone for the answers.

I agree it is an exploit, I was just wondering as me and my friends were playing a MP game, simply put the Axis is usually crushed by cooperation of the Allies and USSR, so I thought it might square it if the U.S. joins the Axis if the Allies and USSR go on a preemptive strike on the Axis.

It just keeps it in Balance for longer and makes it quite an interesting Game. Especially the drastic redeployment of forces to the Western Hemisphere.

I must say that personally i find that one of the most gratifying aspects of MP games (escpecially on small LANs) are the politics. :D

Everyone schemes behind everyones back, in the pauses we talk in private corners and forge great plans, only to betray your ally with a conspiracy with your "common" enemy. :D

When Germany actually manages to fool the SU player into an "alliance" (We don't attack each other, so that I can take france while you can take China or Persia or whatever, ok?), so that germany can peacefully conquer the whole of Europe before turning east to the unsuspecting fool of a SU, all his troops in India. :D

This I think is what makes MP so great, the possibility to have real strategy's and politics involved ;)

(The Germany scenario was what should have happened, instead my "friend" SU buildt an army that he put just out of sight and attacked me a day after I had started the invasion of Britain. The bastard, I should have watched the map more intently, to see if he really went to war with anyone... Oh well, I won in the end anyway ;) )
