I agree with cthulhu -- doesn't the new Communist state in Korea pose risks when you turn to deal at last with Mao? I will admit, though, that Chiang's diplomacy was suitably underhanded. I'm not a bit sorry for the Japanese. :D

Yes- but the new Communist Korea isn't really powerful.

kenneththegreat said:
Exactly.....shouldn't you deal with the commie Korea before you deal with your fellow countrymen, the commies

No- We will crush the Communists, in one swift stroke.

Still, he had a very good reason in the fact that he couldn't create the other Korea due to lacking a vital province.
Yes. But it also makes it easier to crush them.

Hey Gjerg which do you think is the best land doctrine for Nat China?

I heard some guys say it was on the Human Wave Doctrine Tree but I saw you chose Grand Battle Plan. Which path are you aiming for in that line? Operational Steps, Infiltration, or Attrition?

In my view, Attrition is by far the best doctrine. First of all, it gives cheap infantry and marines (-20%). Not quite as good as Human wave (-25%) in 1941 but much better than human wave in 1944 (-10% to infantry).

Equally, infiltration means that your forces can actually attack at night, instead of losing, and also move a lot faster. Mobility is a key to success, and infiltration means you move faster half of the time.

Not to big a risk though... CHiang does have a lot of war veterans around now, I'm sure he can keep a handful on the border to keep Kim in check while he deals with that pesky Mao.

Not a big risk at all, as the Koreans haven't actually got an army.

They will be crushed!

Look at that photo of them toasting each other - great stuff. Now lets see them fight for control of China - there can be only one!

I wonder if China will become further involved in WW2? Now that it looks like becomign a purely European campaign. A shame that the AI will attack Pearl Harbour anyway - a Japan this humiliated might not be so eager to taunt the dragon.
Well, without giving too much away, we did get involved in world war II- though not in the way I expected.

Just make sure you keep the Chinese communists away from the North Korean communists. As long as they're apart, they shouldn't pose too much of a threat. If they manage to link up... That could be a little more tricky.

Anyway, nice way of pulling one over the Japanese. I'm sure losing Korea must hurt their warwaging ability more than the loss of Taiwain ever could.

The Koreans and mao will never link up. I have too many troops. And yes, losing Korea will hurt Japan far more than Taiwan, but then I got so annoyed at the stubborn ai that I wanted to hurt it as much as possible. And I did. Mwa ha ha.

GuyB said:
Can you influence Korea to become politically more like Nationalist China like in HoI1?

Karl Martell said:
That might be hard, if they're stalinist. But if China (paternal autocrat or social consrvative?) released them as puppet, Kim Il Sung's DPR-Korea might actually be a paternal autocrat or social conservative, too, right? (Despite the red star on the flag.) Or is their mode of government pre-determined?

Technically speaking, the DPRK is Social Conservative, as we are. Kim Il Sung is one of the ministers, but he isn't head of state (security minister I think). I thought he'd be a better choice for AAR purposes. Let's just say he's the power behind the throne as it were.

GuyB said:
I don't own HoI2 so I'm wondering, is it still possible to launch coups in other countries? If so, you could do that to Korea to move its government type closer to yours.
Coups have a less than 1% chance of success, so I don't bother with them.

kenneththegreat said:
You can coup, but if it fails....Houston, we have a problem
Nah- you just get bad relations wth the target. And loads of money wasted.

GuyB said:
Then Gjerg will just have to make sure he doesn't fail....though we'll need to see more updates for that! You have us hooked, Gjerg, we need more!!!

Sorry to keep you waiting then! But this will be my last update for about a week, there is a big big report due at the end of the week, and I haven't finished it yet. So this will have to keep you going.

The Civil War Resumes

peace.jpg

Nationalist solider and tame dove in Korea, shortly after the ceasefire with Japan.

To most people in China, the end of the war with Japan promised a new era of peace and cooperation. The continued debates of the national assembly, where representatives of all factions engaged in spirited though long-winded debate gave hope that the future government of China could be led by debate and democracy rather than guns and bullets.

These hopes were of course, a sham. None of the factions had abandoned their goals. The warlords were never prepared to surrender an inch of their power to any central government. Chairman Mao, the Great Helmsman, Great Leader and Great Teacher was as determined as ever to sweep away all who stood in his path to create a new society. And Chiang of course, stood firm in his desire to crush the Communists and the warlords and secure the rule of the Chinese National Party once and for all.

Despite their desire to destroy the other, neither Chiang nor Mao was prepared to admit it to the Chinese people. The victory against Japan had only been possible because of genuine collaboration between the troops of each faction. The soldiers of the Guomindang had done the most, but that was due to numbers. The Communists and the Ma family all had victories to their name. Thus, as they prepared their armies to battle, they trod carefully, each giving the illusion of continued collaboration. Thus, even as he prepared to renew the war, Chiang gave the appearance of continued collaboration, agreeing to a shipment of steel, funds, tractors, calculating machines and even aircraft to Yan'an.

sac31.jpg

Chiang sent significant aid to Yan'an, even when preparing to strike

Despite his wish to defeat the Communists once and for all, Chiang had to face some harsh truths. The Red Army had grown in strength during the war with Japan, and now boasted full size divisions. The Communists had established bases apart from Yan'an, particularly in areas that had suffered from Japanese invasion. The Red Army guerrillas were fierce and experienced, and notoriously difficult to find when they didn’t want to be found. Communist agents and sympathisers within the Guomindang itself provided Mao and his commanders with an almost complete picture of the Guomindang military.

Behind the scenes, Chiang had been working to overcome these difficulties. Even as the diplomats signed a peace treaty in Vladivostok, Chiang’s spymaster Dai Li was vigorously collecting information on the loyalties of Guomindang commanders and whether or not they would be leak information to the Communists. Only a very few commanders were privy to Chiang’s plans.

Von Falkenhausen was meanwhile conducting exercises in Shanxi with his new elite troops.

Chinesetroop.jpg

Sniping was a particularly important component of training for the new German trained Chinese mountain troops

The German military mission had trained a total of 9 new elite divisions, along the lines of German Bergsjaeger, even if they had trained in Gansu rather than Bavaria. Fierce and disciplined, Von Falkenhausen believed that his new elite troops were the equal of anything the communists could muster.

sac33.jpg

Von Falkenhausen prepares to attack

When the enemy advances we retreat
when the enemy halts and encamps, we trouble them
when they seek to avoid a battle, we attack
when they retreat, we pursue
Chinese Red Army saying

In a series of secret meetings with Von Falkenhausen, Bai Chongxi and Dai Li, Chiang outlined his strike. Never one to mince words, Chiang named the operation “6th Extermination Campaign”, and it would be a repeat of the 1934 campaign.

Chiang had launched a total of 5 extermination campaigns against the Communists. The first 4 had been bloody disasters. The last had come within an inch of success, and had precipitated the long march, and decimated the Communist forces. Now he would launch one last campaign. Every Red Base would be surrounded by a series of blockhouses, barbed wire and blockades to cut them off from the outside world. The Communists could surrender or starve, but Chiang’s elite troops would destroy them if they tried to escape. When massive numerical superiority had been gathered, the rural Soviets would be destroyed one at a time. Mao’s guerrilla strategy would be countered by overwhelming force. The campaign was scheduled to begin on November 7th, 1938.

This time Chiang would deal with the Warlords and the Communists once and for all.

There would be no weak spots for the Communists to attack. There would be no points in the cordon surrounding Yan'an to allow escape.

There would be no mistakes. There would be no long march, no heroic escapes.

sac34.jpg

The civil war begins again

And there would be no mercy…

Excellent! Now that the Japanese distraction has been dealt with, Chiang can resume his main mission! I'm looking forward to see how you'll let things develop. And in the meantime, good luck with that report due. :)

“6th Extermination Campaign”
Like that. Has a certain directness to it that names like "Overlord" or "Enduring Freedom" lack. :p

Is that screeny taken at another time, in another game perhaps?

Just that 'Communist China' is written in a wierd font, thought you might have altered the screeny or something?

Anyhow, great update :)

Hi Gjerg!

This is a great AAR, like a History book. When I play I see only the numbers on the screen, but not a story. China seems to be one of the most interesting countries in HoI2.

One question: how does the communists get their provinces? Is there a risk for NatChin that one of their provinces switches to Communist because of the Comm underground activities or does the Communists have to conquer a province with their armies?

Go ahead!
R.

Pacer: Most definitely the reds. The warlords combines wouldn't even make a dent in the ComChi's forces. Although the warlords and the commies combined couldn't stand against the might of the glorious Guomindang!
