Hello!

I've tried to complete "Awake and Angry" -achievement multiple times but I've always failed. Does anyone have any tips/guide/strategy on how to survive and destroy Japan as Nationalist China?

My general strategy is:
- rush to annex communist China
- puppet all warlords (via focus), annex Guanxi Clique ASAP for resources
- build as many civilian factories as possible, fortify border with Japan
- train a lot of basic infantry divisions
- only produce rifles (I can't get enough cannons nor have enough resources)

For other national focuses, I tend to pick lots of industry and also the financial ones to keep inflation as low as possible. I also usually pick the Army Reform focus very early and use all the military experience to get rid of the nasty effects.

When the war breaks out, I can usually survive for at least a year or two. Last game I managed to survive 1942 and even push a tiny bit into the Japanese territory. Every single time I run out of rifles or lose because of attrition and then the Japanese push through my lines and there is no way I could stop them.

Does anyone know a good strategy on how to annihilate Japan and get the achievement? I've tried to search for Nationalist China guides but seems like they're all outdated.

Just build small arms and play defense. I dont think i attacked once in the first 10 months - 1 year. In my current game so far in 1939 i've built just military factories.

I’d like to know if the achievement is even working???

pic attached.. it's not showing that i forced japan to sue for peace? they asked for peace through their event. isnt' that what's required for the first red x?

I took all of Manchuria and Korea and yet it still shows a red X as if I didn’t complete the requirement (Japan was forced to sue for peace after losing all of Manchuria and Korea).

I think you have to integrate all the warlords, too.

I can’t say for sure, because in my current game, I decided to fight to the end, since I was in the allies, and figured all my nice allies would be able to help make a beach head on the home islands so I could pour my troops in (I didn’t feel like giving up Korea). Too bad even with all their attention available for attacking Japan, nobody seems to be able to do that.

Here is my tips for playing Nationalist China:
1.Simply put your large amy on the frontline of Beijing and defense it. Try not to lose too much land in order to make a short frontline as Japan will put its massive amy on the field which results in out of supply and eventually kill themselves.
2.Secure your naval bases with only few divisions to prevent naval invasion.
3.Manually control your divisions to reinforce dangerous battle (usually happens in places like Beijing) and retreat those who are going to lose all their organization. Regroup them in relatively safe places and doing this again.

If you play this right, you will lose no land and Japan will eventually lose its divisions' strength because of the casualties and attrition. Soon you will find they are weak enough for you to launch a counterattack.

Before 1.5, I always defeated all Japanese Amy on the mainland in early 1939. Now with the penalty of "Amy Corruption",I have to remove it first which make the early game a little harder. However, China will eventually recieve a lot of bonus later which make you attack much easier. Now with the Japan sue for peace feature, I find it quite easy to finish war even before 1940 and you don't need to worry about fighting with Axis like before anymore.

As for the achievement, it should be a bug as it is pointed in 1.5.1 beta patchlog.

This achievement is one of the worst in the game. I just wasted three whole days for this achievement and got robbed in the end, because the game denied me Hong Kong and Guangzhouwan after the bloodiest World War I've ever had in HoI IV (nearly 90 million deaths for the Axis and Allies alone). There are so many things which can break this achievement, it's insane. And whoever thought, that these two provinces should be part of this achievement too, must be the devil.

If you join the Axis you can write this achievement off, because you can't take Guangzhouwan (can't take stuff from Free France, although you have claims, because it gets transferred to Vichy France...) (and Hong Kong if a Civil War happens in the UK, because than everything from the UK will be for the British Empire). And both nations had no cores on this territory too.

If you play the game historically correct, you can't get the achievement at all too. Idk why Paradox wasted potential here. There are so many ahistoric things in the game already, why not an option to transfer the ownership over to China if you are best buddy with the Allies or something similar.

You have only two options: Backstab your allies as fast as you can (or it will be too late and painful) or join the Comintern if (!) Japan declares war against the Soviet Union, so you can defeat the Allies and the Axis, because you have to defeat both factions to get this achievement under normal circumstances.

Sorry for the rant, I had to let some off some steam. I am so angry right now.

The part about Japan is the easy step of this achievement tbh. Be a turtle and let the Japanese come after you subjugated/annexed all the warlords and Communist China. That could require some restarts, but if you get everything in time you will be fine. Take the forces from your puppets and build your own army and slowly tech into better equipment after you produced rifles only for the first year. It's also a good idea to build some forts along the northern border. Normally, this method takes some time, but it is very safe.

So you do need the colonies? FFS, I wonder'd why it hadn't popped after annexing the last puppet. So now I have to take down the Allies? After I helped them take down the Axis and the Comintern?

Yes, you have to do it if you want the achievement in this run. As I said, i stumbled into the same problem. At first with a democratic China and than with a non-aligned China in the Axis. The only not so devasting way would be to join Comintern in a new game, but I don't want to try it again for a long time now...

Perhaps you could try release Communist China as they have all the cores too so you won’t lose any land.

Nope, that sucks. Communist China will still have the tech when you annex them plus you lose your entire army. Very bad, don't do that.

I really hate these things with the achievements. It's like the reviving the Austria-Hungary achievement. Why do I need to fight an entire faction for 1 small piece of land? This is the part of the game I really hope they rework.

I'm a bit nonplussed about this to be honest. I might just go play a Manchukuo game as the thought of taking down the rest of the planet for 3 cities is just...ugh.

Thanks for answers! With the new commander system I find it quite difficult to manually retreat low organization troops and reinforce them with fresh troops. They seem to always override my orders and move themselves to somewhere else. I also tried to use field marshal with 3 generals (24 divisions each) but for some reason that turned out to be even more difficult as when I made the order to defend Beijing borderline he only assigned 48 troops there, so I ended up making a frontline order for the whole border with all three armies (which is a mess). Any tips on how to align troops as the border always turns into a mess with the new system for me? I am probably doing something wrong. Naval invasions are easy to fight off, but the northern border collapses in 2 years or so.

Are there any good ways to join Comintern as Nationalist China? I'm pretty confident that I could beat Allies with Soviets to secure the cities (provided that I could beat the Japanese in the first place). But when I pick the Anti-Communist focus they don't seem to be too fond of taking me to their faction.

Is there any reason to build infrastructure over forts at the Beijing Borderline? I find that the attrition especially in Shanxi lands is very painful.

Also, what division template would you recommend to use as Nationalist China when fighting Japanese?

Sorry for so many questions, but I really want to get this achievement!

I also believe the port owned by Portugal as well

Man, thats annoying. Honestly, there should be an option to peacefully regain the ports; after all, Guangzhouwan was returned to China in '46. Hong Kong and Macau were eventually returned to the ChiComs, one would have to think that the allies would be more amenable to the KMT. Not saying that it would be super plausible within the timeframe of the game, but not absurd, either.

My suggestion: add a focus to the 'anti-imperialism' tree to enable China to ask for the treaty ports from the allies, under the right circumstances (I'd say, being a formal member of the allies, and non-aligned or democratic).

Or just, you know, remove the ports from the achievement. Or both.

I think I will give up on HoI4 achievements because of things like this.
The lvl 10 fieldmarshal is what's doing it to me

I consider awake and angry to just be another WC achievement at this point

With the current XP ratio the lvl 10 field marshal seems impossible. I conquered NA with one... not enough XP for one level from 4 to 5, although he already had progress despite inflicting over 13 million casualities. Totally plausible... not.

So we have to WC as nationalist China.

Is this the same for the warlord achievement to own China and Japan?

Basically several different WC runs to get all these :/

I've found that since support art needs less guns, you can spam out 10 width infantry with support art. I've only done Manchukuo out of all the chinas so far, though, so I don't know how Nat china's much larger army will fare with this.
