Greetings my fellow comrades! This is my first foray into the territory of an AAR, so please forgive any faults you may find (and I'm sure there will be quite a few). Since I am a novice, I shall start with a small prologue, with the intent of (hopefully) whetting your appetite and allowing me to practise my writing. This AAR has taken much inspiration from Teivel's excellent AAR "One and Indivisible" and as such, the style shall be a similar nature; a hybrid. I hope that this is perceived as an homage and not plagiarism :) So, without further ado, I present to you my prologue to "Avalon: The Worker's Paradise"!

November, 1921
Stadtschloss Palace, Berlin

It was a cool November evening in Berlin and General Erich von Ludendorff paced before the grand doors to the Imperial study, awaiting his summons. He was debating how to best present his plan to the Kaiser, when the doors opened and a servant bid him to enter. He stepped through the great doors and halted in front of a desk, behind which sat His Imperial and Royal Majesty Wilhelm the Second, Kaiser of the German Empire.

Erich von Ludendorff and Kaiser Wilhelm 'Bill' von Hohenzollern
General von Ludendorff bowed deeply “Your Imperial Majesty.”
Wilhelm rose from his seat “Ah, the hero of the Great Spring Offensive. Tell me, to what end does my First Generalquartiermeister seek an audience with me?”

Erich took a deep breath, sent a silent prayer to the heavens and spoke to his leader
“We have been at war for seven long years now. The country is on the verge of economic collapse, the military is strained, and our armies have neither the ability nor the will to invade the British Isles. The war must end.
We must have a Peace with Honour.”

The Kaiser leant on his desk, brow furrowed in thought
“Yes, what you say is true. The people have had enough of this war. Russland, Italien, Frankreich, Rumänien, Griechenland und Serbien have fallen to our armies. The trade with France and Italy has weakened the effect of the British blockade on our people, yet morale is still in dire straits among the populace.”
The Kaiser sat, and indicated for the General to do the same. One hand went to his face to pull at his moustache
“The plan has much merit. How to achieve it is another matter entirely.”

von Ludendorff softly sighed in relief. He was worried that the Kaiser would show the same militaristic vigour of his youth, fuelled by the recent death of the Empress. He cleared his throat and proceeded to outline his plan
“Your Majesty, Britannien is in even worse shape than we are. They have lost almost all of their allies, seen themselves thrown off the continent and are suffering mass revolt in Eire. They are sick of war, and would accept worthy peace conditions.”

The Kaiser stood “Tell the Foreign Office to draw up a draft.” He put his pen to paper and began to write ‘I, His Imperial and Royal Majesty Wilhelm the Second, by the Grace of God, German Emperor and King of Prussia, Margrave of Brandenburg, Burgrave of Nuremberg, Count of Hohenzollern, Duke of Silesia and of the County of Glatz, Grand Duke of the Lower Rhine and of Posen, Duke in Saxony, of Angria, of Westphalia, of Pomerania and of Lunenburg, Duke of Schleswig, of Holstein and of Crossen, Duke of Magdeburg, of Bremen, of Guelderland and of Jülich, Cleves and Berg, Duke of the Wends and the Kashubians, of Lauenburg and of Mecklenburg, Landgrave of Hesse and in Thuringia, Margrave of Upper and Lower Lusatia, Prince of Orange, of Rugen, of East Friesland, of Paderborn and of Pyrmont, Prince of Halberstadt, of Münster, of Minden, of Osnabrück, of Hildesheim, of Verden, of Kammin, of Fulda, of Nassau and of Moers, Princely Count of Henneberg, Count of the Mark, of Ravensberg, of Hohenstein, of Tecklenburg and of Lingen, Count of Mansfeld, of Sigmaringen and of Veringen, Lord of Frankfurt, hereby grant General Erich von Ludendorff permission to negotiate a peace with the Entente under the following conditions…’

Several days later, The Cabinet Room of 10 Downing Street, London

“Can you believe it!? The nerve of the Boche! The sheer bloody nerve!”
The source of the animated voice was Andrew Bonar Law, Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Arthur Balfour, the Foreign Secretary replied “If we don’t accept this offer, the people will throw us out! We’ll have a damned Bolshevik uprising on our hands. The King would go the way of the Czar, and we’d all go to the guillotine. Is that what you want?”

“Gentlemen, it’s clear that the Hun has us in quite a pickle.” Came a new, gruff voice “If we accept this so-called ‘Peace with Honour’, we end the war. However, we also lose it. There will be damage to our reputation. But, the war would be over. We would maintain control over our Empire and our Dominions. Our people would be relieved; not over-joyed, to be true, but relieved none the less. Many in our government” A look to Bonar Law at that “would not be pleased. Yet Arthur speaks the truth. If we refuse, we face more internal strife. We cannot maintain control over Ireland under these conditions for much longer, and the military is in no state to invade Europe. I think it’s clear that we must accept the lesser of two evils. The mainland is beyond our reach gentlemen. The question comes down to whether or not we’re completely mad. I leave it to our esteemed Prime Minister to decide.”
With that, all three heads turned to the man with his head in his hands. David Lloyd-George looked up with a tired and haggard face, old past its years by the pressures of the war

Balfour, Bonar Law, Churchill and Lloyd-George: Four men at the helm of the British Empire
“I see your penchant for speaking hasn’t faded, Winston old boy.” Winston Churchill gave a small nod, appreciating the compliment. Lloyd-George sighed “Gentlemen, your opinions are all appreciated. I understand your objection Andrew, and Arthur’s concerns are well justified. I have made up my mind.
“Send a telegram to the German High Command. We accept this ‘Peace with Honour’. God help us all.”

Lecture Hall, Cambridge University, 1984

"The 'Peace with Honour' was signed on November the 11th, 1921. It brought the 7-year long conflict to it's end. The two imperialist nations then began to lick their wounds; Germany at the height of it's power, the United Kingdom attempting to suppress the righteous anger of the people of Britain. The loss of the war demonstrated how corrupt and inefficient the blood-thirsty capitalistic imperialist nation of Britain was. The veil had been torn down, and the people had seen their leaders for what they were.
Pathetic cowards. The rise of the British people in revolution was inevitable; they merely awaited the spark; and that spark came."

The lecturer, one Winston Smith, paused for breath, surveying the room before him, packed as it was with students, many eagerly taking notes, others transfixed by his display of socialist fervour.

"Inspired by their comrades in the newly established Commune of France, the TUC called for a general strike following the repression of a strike in South Wales in 1925. The imperialists then tried to call their dogs in the military to crush the will of the people, but little did they know that their soldiers were not mindless automatons, but instead men in their own right. Many joined our righteous cause, both in the Army and in the Navy. Six weeks of revolution followed. Six weeks of the glorious rise of the British proletariat to take their rightful place at the helm of their nation, to be ruled as the people are meant to be ruled; by the people. They drove out the Royal family, along with many of the capitalist bourgeois bastards, dissolved the corrupt Houses of Parliament and formed the noble Congress of Trade Unions.
The Union of Britain was born, and it's future was bright."

Well, there you go. Hope you enjoyed. Next, an overview of the UoB in 1936. And please, comment if you have anything to say.

At the start of 1936, eleven years after the revolution, the Union of Britain had established its authority over its lands. The CTU decided to review their position in the Isles.

The great socialist state and its neighbours

The Union was surrounded by the oceans, its nearest neighbours being the separatist state of Ireland and the fellow Syndicalist nation of the Commune of France. Beyond that, Germany and her puppets in the imperialist Mitteleuropa alliance, their peoples shackled by the archaic autocracy. Beyond that, neutral nations such as the Papist Italian Federation, her people kept mute by what Marx termed "the opiate of the people" and the countries of Scandanavia, the chains ripe for the breaking.

Canada, formerly a dominion of the British Empire, now the heart of the Entente. The Royalist reactionaries may try to subdue the people of Britain once more, but they shall not succeed, not while the people of the Union are alive and willing to die for their freedom!

The current governing body of the Congress of Trade Unions. Philip Snowden as Chairman, and Arthur Horner as General Secretary

With the elections fast approaching, political analysts are scrambling to figure out who will emerge victorious. But with Oswald Mosley still a wild card, its anyone's guess. One thing that almost everyone agrees on is that Snowden, 72, will soon retire. This election will dictate the future of the Union.

The allotment of our industrial ability. Soon we will have our factories working to improve the Republican Armed Forces

Estimates of the CTU's plans for the industry include an expansion of the transport network and the industrial abilities of Scotland and Wales, as well as an expansion of the Air Force and Navy. Depending on the victor in the elections, the Union could see vast military expansion, economic focus, or even care being paid to every need of the people

In all, the Union is in a period of stable growth, yet it is not known how long this will last, with storm clouds gathering in the United States, Spain, Russia and even in the Union itself, with rumours that Mosley intends to announce a new political doctrine. For some, it is a frightening time. For others, an exciting one. But everyone agrees that it is interesting, and that 1936 could well mark a turning point in the history of the British Isles.

I think a ton of people got the reference, as obvious as it is. This is awesome and I wonder what direction it'll take. One part of me wants the Congregationists to take power for their program, but on the other hand, Mosley would hunt down the royalists like the dogs they are, hiding in Ottawa... and he can be removed later if he goes on too much of a power trip.

The reference is obvious, true, but only to those that have read the book. For some reason, that isn't all 7 billion people on the planet. What a shame.

Yes, I'm interested as to which way it'll go too. My choices will be swayed by what the AI does, such as how the Commune and Italy turn out in their elections. I'm also willing to listen to advice, so anyone can feel free to give their two cents.

On January 4 1936, the government of the Union of Britain announced its industrial and technological projects, along with any appointments to the government.
The new government appointments consisted of the replacement of Bill Alexander with Eric Blair, known author, as Chief of Republican County Militas, the appointment of Emanuel Shinwell as the Chief of General Staff of the Republican Army and placing Andrew Cunningham as Commander-in-Chief of the Republican Navy.

The new members of government. Will they stay after the election?

As this news was processed by the political analysts in the Union and elsewhere, the government was putting its technological plans into action. Calls were made, telegrams sent, doors knocked on. Before long, the five teams responsible for the projects had received their orders. Alan Brooke was to focus on the ability to supply armies more effectively, Dudley Clarke was to improve the defensive tactics of the Republican Army and Andrew Cunningham was to refine the naval doctrines employed by the Union, especially important to him as he needed to prove his ability in his new post. While these men were assigned secretaries, assistant researchers and allocated resources, the Enfield Arsenal was ordered to improve the equipment of the common infantryman in the Army, and the United Engine-Leyland Plant given plans for a new model of tank. All five teams were given their orders, and a deadline of the elections in September. It is hoped that the new technology will improve the Federationist's chances in the elections.

The production schedule was also announced on the fourth, with the focus mainly on improving the Republican Navy and Airforce, with orders for new carriers, battle cruisers and fighters heading to the respective industries. Industry was also allotted to upgrade the obsolete divisions in the Union's Armed forces, a number that will increase after the current round of technology is complete. Plans are in the works to improve the transportation network of the Union, particularly in Wales in Scotland.

That's the initial overview done, unless people want something specific. Next time, some actual progress. And perhaps we shall see the meeting of a certain group of Socialists in Birmingham.

The Office of the Chairman of the Congress of Trade Unions, London

Two chairs were placed before a roaring fire. Philip Snowden, chairman of the CTU was sitting in one, Arthur Horner, his General Secretary in the other. Topic of the day; Oswald Mosley's call to gather Socialist extremists of all stripes, Maximists, Sorelians, National-Syndicalists and even Bolsheviks, driven into hiding after the failure of the Russian Civil War were flocking to Birmingham.
"Arthur, I'm getting too old for this job. First all the normal divisions in the Congress, and now this wild card? It's a damn mess."

"It is a bloody tough nut isn't it? But you've done a fine job of it my friend, a fine job indeed." Horner leant back, pulled out a cigar and started to smoke
"Mosley's got all the names coming. Valois, Mussolini, Beria, and even some Hungarians are coming with the French." He let out a billow of smoke
"That's not all. We've also heard that Kerensky's been assassinated."

Snowden sat bolt upright "The Russian President? Dead!? This could well herald a second Revolution. Who's taken control?"

"Ah, this is the bad news. The reactionary aristocrats in their 'Senate' have 'elected' Grand Duke Dimitri as President."

Mosley's guests and the new order in Russia
"A Romanov? The Russian proletariat will not like that. They remember all too well the dates 1905 and 1917. I predict they'll last six months."
Snowden stood and walked to the window, looking out at the busy London morning "I've run this country since its infancy. I built it. It is my child. I've poured years of my life into it, neglected my family for it. But my day is done. I must let the chick leave the nest." He turned to Arthur "I'm retiring, Arthur. I'll announce it after the election, when my successor is clear, but I won't run again."

Arthur nodded "You've done well. I can't think of a finer man who could have done better."

Philip laughed "Oh, I'm far to old for compliments Arthur. But I thank you. My day is done, but I will not let it fall to Mosley's dogs. He would undo all my toil to make this nation a bastion of true Socialism to satisfy his own ego." He walked to his desk and began typing a message "I'm authorising the SSB to send an agent to watch this meeting. He shall go as a bodyguard." He tore off the sheet of paper, sealed in an envelope and called in his secretary. As he entered, Snowden handed it to him "Ensure this reaches Christopher Hill. Let nobody see it."

Arthur waited until he had left "You know that Mosley will do anything to gain power. I wouldn't put an uprising past him"

Philip nodded "I know. we simply have to hope that the people will reject his madness. For now, all we can do is wait and see what Christopher's agent reveals."

Hotel Paragon, Birmingham

The small group of people were clustered around the oak table in the centre of the room, the quiet murmurs echoed by the translators of those conversing. To an observer, it would look like a meeting of wealthy immigrants. French was spoken, as was Italian, Hungarian and even Georgian by one group of delegates.

However, the man overseeing it was not a random observer off the street. He was William Mansfield, agent of the Secret Service Bureau. He was here on the personal orders of Christopher Hill, who told him to observe this meeting and report back any findings. The government regarded Mosley as dangerous and potentially detrimental to the stability of socialism in the British Isles. William’s father and uncle had both fought in the Revolution; his father even participated in the storming of Buckingham Palace. Taking pride of place over the mantel piece in the Mansfield home was a ceremonial sabre belonging to one of the guards there.

William reached around to the holster on his hip, ensuring that his pistol was still secure. He remembered his handler’s spiel when he was handed the weapon “The Browning Hi Power is a single-action, semi-automatic handgun, using 9mm rounds. Take good care of it, and use it only if you have to. The higher-ups don’t want a diplomatic incident if any of Mosley’s ‘guests’ get hurt or killed.”

William stifled a yawn with the back of his hand ‘where is that bloke with the coffee?’ he thought to himself, as he swayed softly on the balls of his feet, giving the impression of boredom while subtly observing everybody in the room.

One member of the Italian delegation could be heard to say “Dov'è quel pigro Inglese?”
The Hungarians muttered “Ez időpocsékolás. Miért Valois állniuk ránk?”
Two of the Georgian assistants were whispering “Igi unda gaigzavnos Dzugasvili . Samagierod, ch’ven unda iskhdnen ert’ad ch’veni gamoch’enili lideri.”
Only the French looked pleased to be there. The leader of the French present, one Georges Valois, stood and said “Mes nobles amis, ne vous inquiétez pas. Camarade Mosley sera long momentanément. Soyez patient.”

Soon after this had been translated to all the respective parties in the room, the man of the hour, Oswald Ernald Mosley, stepped through the door, flanked by fellow Maximist and his protégé, Clive Lewis; referred to more commonly as C.S Lewis.
“My friends!” cried the British arrival “Delightful that you could all make it. I’ve so been looking forward to this meeting.” He said, as he made his way to the head of the table ‘About bloody time.’ thought William, shaking himself out of his slight stupor.

Mosley took his seat and cleared his throat
“We are all here, correct? Valois, Beria, Mussolini…” he turned to an assistant who whispered in his ear “Ah, yes. Very good. Now, shall we begin?” A woman knocked on the door, carrying William’s coffee. He thanked her, apologised to the group, and returned to his position, sipping the hot brew as he walked ‘Hmm. This tastes a bit odd. Must be a Centroamerican bean’ he mused. He refocused his attention as Valois stood to address those gathered before him

“Mes camarades et amis estimés…”
William’s mind clicked into French, translating as he listened to the words;
‘we are here for the mutual benefit of those united under the cause of true socialism. For too long, the weak and cowardly men and women of most of our nations have avoided the truth that the state must control the entire country, the military, the industry and the people. There is no escaping these facts. To the end of strengthening our collective goal of the world revolution, we shall unify our diverse political doctrines into a new, unified view of the world. Comrade Mosley shall lead us in this effort.’

He gave a slight bow and sat down. The assembled men applauded his opening of the meeting. Mosley smiled magnanimously
“Thank you for that Monsieur Valois. You shall all be as integral to this effort as I, as we forge the future of the world here, in this conference room in the heart of industrial Britain. This will be seen by future generations as the dawn of a new age, the heralding of an era of everlasting peace under our order. Each of our nations shall be led into this glorious future by those present. France shall be headed by Valois, Italy by Mussolini, Georgia by Beria and Britain by me. We shall divide the world into our spheres of influence, starting with Europe. I took the liberty of drawing up a rough plan.

The Mosley Plan, as it came to be known, in its earliest surviving form
"Blue represents French-controlled territory, orange Georgian, brown Italian, red British, and the green is some sort of Pan-Arabic Socialist Federation, perhaps with an ‘independent’ Persia. The sub-borders represent nations merely under the control of these nations, not directly controlled by them. As I said, this is a very rough draft, subject to change. If you see here in the Caucasus, that border is in case there is a Second Russian Revolution. If there is and it succeeds, the new Russian nation shall take all land north of that border. You Beria, will, we hope, forge a united Socialist Caucasus for us. We understand that the industry and military of the smaller socialist nations is limited, so Britain and France will do all it can to aid our comrades.”

As these words were translated and processed by all present, William’s mind went into overdrive. ‘This is worse than anyone could ever have dreamed of. They’re planning to subvert the socialist ideal, and conquer the world for their own personal ambition!’ his mind frantically tried to recall everything his handler had said. Nothing had come close to dealing with a plot of this magnitude. They government was prepared to suffer Mosley’s blustering, for him to sway some of the people but ultimately to be defeated and fade into obscurity. ‘If this is his plan, he’ll stop at nothing to succeed! He’ll over turn the work of the past decade for his own ego. He could use his Redshirts to force the vote in his favour. This is a disaster on a scale never before imagined!’

William’s stream of frantic thought and attempts and creating a plan were halted by Mosley’s next words.

“Now, we are all aware that there are many who will struggle against this ideal. They shall be branded enemies of the state, hounded, exiled, imprisoned. We shall eliminate all possible opposition to our glorious doctrine. Starting today.” With that, all the groups started to murmur
“What does he mean, ‘starting today’?”
“Is there a spy here? An assassin from the reactionary governments?”
Mosley cleared his throat “Gentlemen, here today we have a man sent by my government to monitor our activities and plans and report back to my government. If it were found to be subversive, we would no doubt be arrested by our governments- with the exception of Comrade Beria, of course. What this agent, one William Mansfield, does not realise is that he will not leave this room alive.”

William’s eyes widened with horror as his mind processed Mosley’s words. He reached for the revolver tucked in his holster, but as he did he was overcome with a barrage of savage coughs, bringing him to his knees as he hacked and gasped for breath. The group looked on, stunned, as Mosley stood
“I knew that they would spy on me. I planned for it. Yet, what the current leaders of our nation do not realise is that Christopher Hill is an avid supporter of this new doctrine, of Totalism. You were doomed from the start.”

As blood coursed from William’s lungs and out his mouth in shuddering coughs and gut-wrenching rasps, he cursed Mosley. Cursed him for the doom he was sure to bring upon the Union if he were to gain power. As his last breath rattled out of his lungs, he prayed that there would be others, better prepared, stronger than he, who could prevent the madman from drowning the Isles in blood.

Wow, okay, this is getting bad. So Hill is conspiring with Mosley to purge the secret services even before they get to power... I predict a grim future!

@Ericafaq Ah, but it's not supposed to be the proper doctrine. Instead, it's the ambition of a small cabal of men using syndicalism as a tool to conquer the world and forge it anew. Ideas are but tools to them, tools with which to control the people and dominate the globe.

All shall be resolved. Mosley's gang are too good to leave such an obvious mistake.
