Just a couple of notes:

1. I have heard/read somewhere that the computer version of 'World in Flames' is NOT going to have an AI in the game. Hence, it is supposed to be used solely by human players playing in Internet or local networks. Could this be true?

2. Sapura, out of curiosity... What does LOL mean? I have seen you and other people using it, and every time I have seen it I have wondered at its arcane meaning. I am confess I am lost with all these newfangled expressions, by Jove! ;)

Kind regards to all, as always.

Martin.

P.S.: If you are worried about expected sales, I know at least ten people who are already anxious to get their hands on the CG version of EU!!

AdMartin - Svea Rike was also sold in Denmark (and probably also Norway and Finland), as I saw it in shops over here. Incidentally, it was (also) a port of a boardgame (also called Svea Rike) - and unlikely (IMO) to appeal much to non-Scandinavians, as it was a game focusing on Swedish history. As such, EU probably has more that appeal to non-Swedish Scandinavians as well (at least the Danes can play themselves in some scenarios).

Regarding marketing, companies like Battlefront.com and Shrapnel Games seem to be doing quite well exclusively using on-line sales. Horse and Musket from Shrapnelgames recently sold out their first printing recently, and I think the demo-download of Steel Beasts has now exceeded 100k (so at least some people know about that game). Maybe Paradox ought to attempt something simmilar with EU (which would also satiate all the non-Scandinavian fans).

Martin CY - LOL means Laughing Out Loud. :)

Michael A.

Sapura,

I first thought about (and started) writing a description of Svea Rike but I realized that was pretty pointless. The real point is that Svea Rike is a lot simpler and therefore attracts a wider public. So I wouldn't expect EU to be such a big commercial success as Svea Rike, unless Paradox can sign some good distribution deals outside of Scandinavia.

----------------------------------

I don't know... What you say is right but Svea Rike also lost many buyer as it was to simple. I mean EU is in some ways a Civilization with much more emphasy on war.
I think there is a totally new group of potential buyers out there.

Although I am going back to an old topic, and I admit I am old (27) I agree with ZAGYS in saying that SSI is not Kaput. How can a Co (esp. a U.S.A.)co that can come up with IMP 2 with having some European sensibilities. I say good move SSI and their backers. I Don't like this comglomerisation of their activites, but I think as SSI are still at least nominally independant they deserve the chance as:

Dark Knight
Dragon

Patently disagree. Wrong... wrong...and again Wrong!

I Say to them, leave these boards alone and stick to childs play like LEGO.

Leave Imperialism to the HEROES.

SSI still manages but it's far from being the company it was in the 80's. I'm not sure about Mattell taking it seriously either.

For those interested Frog City is indeed making a new game called Pantheon but it's more for the RTS crowds though.

Balders I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

'Leave them alone and stick to playing Legos?'

Ummmm, not really sure what this is directed at....the running commentary of the US gaming industry? I think that if you had read the post you would have seen that both I and Dark Knight very much would like to a strong SSI and SSG so they can continue to produce excellent strategy games.

Disagree with what? My post primarily concerned Avalon Hill, which Hasbro seems to have purchased for the sole intention of destroying.

Unfortunately correct. (Yeah, it pissed me off to)

Dragon: SSG is an independant Australian company with no links to SSI. I cringe when people mention them in the same sentance...

Well, as I've understood it, ADG will sell a pre-release version without the AI. Then, when the AI is finished they'll release the full version. Of course, the ones who bought the pre-release will get a discount then.

i am not scared of not getting the game, i plan on buying it off a european software site.

this is why i doubt the game will be released in the US.

1.The USA market is full of dumbasses, a good example is the sale of Who Wants to be a Millionaire vs. Half Life in the US, scary huh.
2.Most US gamers dont like games that require more thought than what type of rush to use, or reading a thick manual.
3.Current trends in the US show consoles are taking over, and sale's for smaller games are WAY down.
4.Major titles are coming out, Diablo 2, Dark Reign 2, Vampire the Masquerade:Redemption, Earth 2150, and Ground control are a few examples.
5.Our press is stupid, we gave Age of Empires 2 a better rating than Seven Kingdoms 2 on average.
6.See 5.
7.If they are going to have a service like Battle.net for multiplayer (and i think they should), it will be very expensive.
8.If there are poor sales in Europe, they might just forget about it.

===========================================
All markets are full of dumbasses. The same situation applies in all countries I'm afraid. Otoh this applies for movies too, Jan Claude Van Damne anyone? *puke*.

2.Most US gamers dont like games that require more thought than what type of rush to use, or reading a thick manual.
===========================================
Same here. Let's accept that our niche is staying just that, a niche. Otoh it feels good to be above average intelligence :).

3.Current trends in the US show consoles are taking over, and sale's for smaller games are WAY down.
=============================================
Same situation. Consoles have their use though. Sports games are much more fun on PSX imo.

4.Major titles are coming out, Diablo 2, Dark Reign 2, Vampire the Masquerade:Redemption, Earth 2150, and Ground control are a few examples.
=====================================
Ground control is Swedish. Makes me proud :). Otoh EU will too. GC is the best to come out of here since Pinball dreams (great guys btw, still jellous of all their gear and money). Gran Turismo was ok but I hate driving games.

5.Our press is stupid, we gave Age of Empires 2 a better rating than Seven Kingdoms 2 on average.
6.See 5.
=======================================
Well you haven't seen Swedish PC Gamer here then <g>.

7.If they are going to have a service like Battle.net for multiplayer (and i think they should), it will be very expensive.
=========================================
Actually Paradox is developing some new technology for this. Interesting idea.

8.If there are poor sales in Europe, they might just forget about it.
========================================
I think so too.

APKicks,

We may have a lot of dumbasses over here but we also have a lot of gamers interested in games like this. Don't worry, if this game is successful somewhere in Europe it will end up in the US market. I just hope it doesn't take two years like 1602 A.D. did.

My city(Gothenburg) is only 500k and the babes here are awesome. In my opinion middle sized cities are far better than huge cities. Crimes are lower etc.

In your case (SD, yes I know where it is and I know it's pretty remote) you have another option, namelly order it online. Shops are overrated anyway and they are the ones thinking Barbie should take 99% of the shelf space and MS games the rest.

Try Chips & Bits, very good. EB World is another option for Americans.

OFF TOPIC: WIF the Computer Game

Consider the number of possible moves in a chess game. Now consider the amount of effort put into making a _really good_ computer chess player. Now take the chess set, and go from 32 pieces to ~3000, and from what, 6 types (sorry, I'm not much of a chess player!) to >50. Now write an AI to competently play WiF. Folks, whatever ADG says, the absolute best AI that they will come up with will only be good for novices. I predict that the non-AI version will be the only release. ADG is not a big company; last I heard Chris (the programmer, the ONLY programmer) works a real job besides writing WiFtCG (of course, maybe they got an investor!). I want WiFtCG, but the market is just too durn small to expect much more than a 'smart' solitaire/multiplayer platform.

Scott

PS I love WiF - I have 3 copies of WiFFE, all the kits/expansions etc., I just think this is too big a project for the resources available!

PPS Sorry for the long Off Topic post...

EB World is not in the state, not a single EB in the state. I live near the 3rd largest city in the state (Aberdeen) and it has 25k, but is a 'retirement' community and almost everyone here thinks consoles rule (and Perfect Dark is better than Half-Life...). So i am kinda screwed.

Also, i am to young to own a credit card and although my mom would allow me to buy stuff on the internt, the shipping and handling is usually drives it up a good bit. But i do have a job and i get payed bi-weekly so money isnt that big a of problem usually.
