I really like the Ironman feature in EU4. It certainly pulls the reins when I feel an "urge" to cheat. But! I am really annoyed by the game autosaving every month, and EVERY time when a deal happens. I have an OK computer to run EU4 and literally one of the worst processors for the game. I am okay with one save game, but I don't want to save the game every month. This was the thing in EU3 for me. I had to clear the cache and delete the autosaves every time to speed up the game a bit.

Now I've played the game for 8 hours and I have only made 50 years of progress. In the demo without any saving I was able end the demo by playing just an hour. Even in EU3 I am certain I can make more progress than that. I'd like the game to allow us at least choose the frequencies of saving, or disabling the autosaves and using only one manual save at a time. This means a lot for me regarding a relaxing gaming experience.

Edit Appendix: I also cannot find the directory of where the save games are.

But couldn't you at least give us the option to save whenever we want? I understand having only one save. Moreover, I don't want to save for like 5 or 10 years. Which is actually gonna make the game more difficult for me. I am asking this not that I find the ironman mode difficult or easy, I am merely asking it because it slows the game for me, which ruins my gaming experience.

As I have said in the OP, I finished the demo which spans 28 years in an hour. And now I have only made 50 years of progress having played for 8 hours. Clearly you can see that it puts an unwanted pressure on my laptop.

I agree. However, could you attempt to increase the performance while playing Ironman? It's really rather annoying.

The entire point is at saves at each decision so you can't quit out and return to an earlier save when something goes wrong. If you don't want that, why not just play in non-ironman mode and save whenever you like?

Yeah but having not saving a game is actually going to make things more difficult. The game might crash and I might forget to save say, after playing 80 years. Which is going to annoy me, but I'll be fine. Because it is my fault, not the game's.

I just want to get the achievements, knowing that my computer runs the game perfectly fine without saving a lot.

However it seems to me that the monthly autosave is too frequent. It would be better if one could change the frequency of autosaving like in non-ironman mode (monthly, twice a year/yearly/never). It wouldn't affect too much antireloading/cheating wise, would it?

Yeah, I've always played EU3 and CK2 with an autosave frequency of 5 years and you might think it allows more space for meta-game cheating, but actually if something goes wrong, you'll lose more progress than a monthly save.

The Paradox stance on this is really puzzling. Ironman was made for the fans, and the fans can't stand the constant autosaving. We're not going to cheat if we get a bad event, if so we would play normal. If we really wanted to cheat we could just steamhack to get all the achievements.

Why would you need a proper mode in that case?
I mean you can play the game normally and say I autosave every X years in case of crash otherwise before exiting the game I make a save.

You would have the same result, no? Except that you can cheat the mode.
Ironman mode as PI made it makes it almost impossible to cheat. And that's the goal, be sure that someone in Ironman mode can't cheat.

The reason it was done in my opinion in the first place was to disable the console. Just like a multiplayer experience. One of the reasons for me buying this game was the Ironman Mode. Seeing that devs are not actually helping on this issue is disheartening.

Would increasing the autosave interval to say 3 months really change that much? Getting the autosave rbrty month freezes my game for about 2-5s every time on a low/mid range laptop, and is rather annoying. I don't think 3 month autosave peroid would really enable too many ways to cheat - ofc saving on every decision and diplo action.

And why not just save the game when I quit it, besides the auto saves. It is really annoying that every time I press a button the game saves.

Better yet just add an option to opt out from saving altogether. No saves = No cheating. Could be useful for people with slow hard disks but otherwise good stable computers that don't crash games. Eu4 seems to be very stable. Been playing since release and played demo for like 30 hours and didnt get a single crash.
