Could you have run into this? A known bug, of course, if that's what is happening.
No, no.
I am familiar with the EU2 situation and expected that. We're talking years and years of playing, and even carrying over when I restarted after saving IIRC (I started Saturday morning, never turned off the comp, and was still playing after midnight with a few breaks).
I have been playing as the USSR and autosave has been working just fine.
I have a theory I'd ask someone to check out
if you are doing a new install for other reasons anyway. I'll try to do it myself, but I make no promises
I think that the first game after the 1.02 patch might be screwed up if the autosave preference from the 1.01 install was already set to monthly. It's sort of similar to the other problem - the first attempt to use autosave fails, but for game rather than month/year.
So,
if you reinstall the game for other reasons, please upgrade to 1.01, start a game and set the autosave to monthly and let it run a bit. Then upgrade to 1.02, and start up a game (heck, pick USA Normal/Normal to recreate my circumstances), try to set autosave to one month if it's not there already, and see if autosave is not possible for the duration of that game.
It definately happened and it was not the usual 'skip one and then all is well' that I know from EU2. It never autosaved over hours and hours of play (zero CTDs, in fact, zero CTDs during play of HOI)). I restarted a 1.01 savegame (hey, maybe that's what fixed it? FWIW I CTDed when I tried to save that game), just to verify that <autosave> was my old 1.01 save, and it was.
