I have an ongoing problem in my games. I never (rarely) get promotions through autopromote. I usually end up promoting my best generals on my own because they all seem to stay at Lt. General. But, on my latest game, I decided to ride it out. I thought, hey, maybe it's just a matter of time and I have to wait until later in the game to get promotions (historical).

Well, now it's 1944. Guderian, Manstein, Rommel, Paulus, and tons more of excellent generals have not been promoted. In fact, I check every once and a while to see if I have any new generals or field marshals --perhaps some less famous general has been promoted. Nope! In fact, I am continually experiencing a shortage of full generals!

What is going on here?! Now granted, I don't puke out units (like many others here may do), so that I have hundreds of divisions (heard this affects autopromote). Even so, I have a LOT of divisions but a shortage of generals (I've had to be creative in my attacks to avoid stacking limits).

So, what gives? Why am I getting NO promotions?

Can someone please help me with this?

Thank you!

Autopromote promotes generals that you NEED. If you are marching your armies around in 9 unit stacks using no Lt. Generals then they wont be promoted. Try breaking your armies into 3 corps of 3. That way the game will see the need for new officers and promote them. Also exactly how many divisions do you have? As Germany around the time of Danzig or War I have about 120 divisions total.

I never had that problem. Are you playing 1.03? And what is the skill level of your lt.gen anyway? You can still promote them manually, if you want to.

I'm playing 1.03a.

My entire army is split into stacks of 1, 2, or 3 because I don't have enough Generals (they're all being used for HQ's!)!!

I'm not sure how many divisions I have exactly. I'll have to check when I get home. I've got to have over 200.

I have the same problem. Playing as Russia, NO generals have been created. I tried creating a large stack with no general (except the default generic Maj Gen) , hoping the AI would decide I needed a general, but after several turns, nothing happened. I hate to lose the skill level by manually promoting if the Autopromote is supposed to take care of this for me.

... err... dumb question, I know... do you have Auto-Promote TURNED ON?

Rule of thumb is that when autopromote is switched on, at 0000 if there are enough troops, some generals gets upped for each rank. The priority for promotion is
a/ skill level
b/ whether the general commands a stack over his limit.

I noticed If you are using single stack with LW to reduce supply need, the commanding gen usually gets promoted. I got several LW,OG generals promoted to FM this way. Ignoring this effect, promotion usually goes this way:

- generals promoted to FM, LtGs to full Gen, MjGs to LtG from the highest skill levels or the next one;
- the promotion usually frees up new slots in the lower ranks, which would be filled by next day;
But: air commanders assigned to stacks won't get promoted. Period.

To have nice FMs, before turning the autorpromote on (as GER, usually after Vichy, when some of the generals get a skill level) I promote some LtGens to Gen manually, usually Hausser, Reichenau and von Kluge, giving 4 nice FMs. So Old guards usually not get promoted.

So, overstack your generals and you'll start getting promotions?

Really?! Well, that explains that problem.

While we are on this topic, can I SOMEHOW FIRE MY OLD GUARD GENERALS? I really don't like them, and they are jamming up all of my autopromotion slots.

I'd like a fire general button.

In this thread

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=201890

you can see Hallsten's original event code to get rid of Old Guard Leaders.

You can adapt the same setup for other countries, but you do have to know which are old guard leaders.

Look also at Hallsten's Leader's files which can be found via a Wiki link on the utilities page:

http://www.itworks.sk/download.aspx?id=50001&grp=85

It's dated Oct 05 so it might be only for 1.2, but I don't think that leaders have been changed that much.

At worst there's a couple of new Old Guards that you won't be able to shake through that event ... those files should still work like a charm ...

Shamelessly flogging the link in my signature ... there's some more factors involved in who gets promoted ...

Excellent. Thanks, Disgustoid. I had read your thread before but forgotten about it.

Well, blow me down. I must have autopromote turned off because I CERTAINLY have not gotten the autopromotes I deserved according to your analysis!

I freshly reinstalled after 1.3 came out ... and autopromote was swicthed off from the beginning ... maybe its the same for you ?

Yes, Autopromote is ON!

Ok, here's the scoop. I checked my game. Yes, autopromote is on!
It is currently March of '44. I have 177 Infantry divisions, 19 Motorized divisions, 4 Mechanized, 22 Armored, 2 Para, 4 Mountain, 51 Garrison, and 10 HQs. 279 Divisions/Units!

I only have 9 Field Marshals (most of which I started with!) and 12 Generals! Now, please tell me, what the hell is going on?!

From the ratio settings:

land_field_marshal = 0.0200 * 279 = 5.58 vs 9
land_general = 0.0310 * 279 = 8.649 vs 12
land_lt_general = 0.4100 *279 = 114.39 vs whatever number you have.

So, as you can see, you've already completely exhausted the autopromotion slots, and it is functioning normally. The problem with Germany is that she starts with an enormous number of old guard FM's and Gen's, and so there aren't any available slots for the new guys. The main reason why the sleep old guard event is really handy.
