I, for one, have no patience for micromanaging every single exploration fleet. I have lost too many ships in the Moluccas that way. Automated exploration is better!

Early on, I tend to click off 'el dorado' dlc to be able to manually explore. Especially if one uses random new world. Gotta wonder, would it be possible to make a random new world and continue the save without el dorado to manually explore it?

Reminds me of the first exploration age game I ever played..

CONQUEST OF THE NEW WORLD by interplay in 1997. BOY that was a good game. I still play it on dosbox from time to time. It had random new world you could explore on land and sea, tribes, gold mines, fountain of youth and everything you want. Even a 'temple of war' that gave military bonuses if you discovered it.

nyways, I like early on exploring for westernisation reasons, but late game automated is indeed way better.

Really? I would have suggested the contrary: a risk-percentage that your expedition fails and your fleet gets lost at sea. Not all expeditions were successful after all.

Yep, it is good. :) Away with you, excessive micromanagement!

I have only had explorers die when exploring coastlines, never sea areas.
Many weeks at sea, and then meeting exotic women, strong new drink, unknown diseases... their life span is not long.

Best to leave the land conquests to Conquistadores. (Yeah, it seems like this is working as intended, as in having some risk attached to exploring new shores)

I really like it. It was too cheesy before allowing you exploration to
India way earlier than now. Also it was too tedious.

And about the fleet dying who cares its only 3 light ships and its not like happening every 5 years and often the fleet makes it back alive.

I agree. It would be like the Magellan expedition. The person to lead a first complete circumnavigation was, in fact, Juan Sebastián Elcano, a man of Basque origin who took control of the expedition after Magellan's death. An event like that could happen should the explorer/conquistador die on the way. Perhaps you would have the choice to spend Dip or Mil power and instantly hire a leader (perhaps slightly worse than a regularly hired one for a discounted MP price?) or order the troops to return to friendly territory, shattered retreat -style.

nyways, I like early on exploring for westernisation reasons, but late game automated is indeed way better.

I think @Wiz said somewhere that the next patch will prevent turning DLC on and off during a game. Once you create the game, whatever DLC has been selected will be locked.

I like auto-exploration too - my only complaint is that it's too effective. I know every detail of the North and South American coastlines within a generation of first contact.

Last game, I got a 'conquistadora' by event with incredible stats (3 siege as I recall) who basically achieved what Cortes plus Pizarro plus Champlain plus that dude that crossed South America did. Frankly, it was immersion-breaking. When I got the opportunity to repeat the feat with the Dona Marina event, I had to turn it down for RP reasons.

Then you dont have to press each and every one, if you have no special preference in where to explore

I liked the old system much more than this one. It involved more player involvement in discovering things (and it was fun to use with randomly generated worlds).

Now it is just click and forget until notification about mission completion appears. When that happens all you have to do is set another mission and forget about it. Maybe once in a while put in a new explorer when old one dies. Rinse and repeat.

Not fun for me.

I also love automated exploration, but what bothers me other than fleet being destroyed because the explorer died, is when your exploration fleet gets intercepted by an enemy fleet you know is gonna win the fight, but you can't retreat, so he just fights to the death for no reason. >.>
