I think they've included this change in the patch as is. No buttons, no options, no extra settings, etc.

Can you hear that sound? I think it's the sound of your trade fleets sinking!

I don't think that the possibility to micro-manage your trading fleets into smaller ones is the good way to fix this. I would rather keep the auto-merge, and rebalance naval combat. Having one fleet getting wiped out is not fun nor reallistic. If a trading fleet get caught, but only loses say 25% of its strenght, then the benefits to split your trading fleets would be close to zero. Problem solved, more fun, less micro.

You make a great point, apart from the fact that no one ( at least not me) was arguing against fleet merging (it's a fine idea, as I've already stated) but that it should be made optional and not compulsory. Back to your point though, Fleets rarely got completely wiped when the game first came out but since then the lethality of naval combat has become extremely harsh and arguably unrealistic.

If, as some trolls seem to be rejoicing in, freedom has been given up for the sake of a marginal gameplay improvement then perhaps rebalancing naval combat could mitigate this oversight.

As for MP, it is actually quite simple: If you see another human player trying to park his main battle fleet next to your trade fleet, you should probably think about this deeply.

That is why I said "the possibility". I understood that there is a problem, with the current auto-merging. I just think that making auto-merging optional is not the solution. A rebalancing of naval combat would not make the problem disappear, but would greatly reduce it, as you said. In my opinion it would be enough.

This may be what Wiz meant when he replied to this issue in the video A reply to Arumba : "That's a different issue, that's something else we need to improve on in some other ways". He also said that they have that in mind, so we should expect some evolution in the future.
