Just had another matrilineal marriage sneak up on me: my heir, who was betrothed to a foreign duchess, found himself getting married and leaving for his wife's nation, without any notification to me.

Not a bug if your heir was landed. When you land someone you give up control over their affairs, and yeah, they might be dumb enough to accept an offer to matrilineally marry.

No, he wasn't. The choice was given to my ruler, at the ruler's court. The matrilineal checkbox was not checked when the betrothal was originally made, and no offer was made to turn it matrilineal when the marriage occurred.

Then it was your ruler who was in charge. Good reason to revolt against him, he's treating your progeny like bargaining chips. Still not a bug, though. When you die and start playing said heir, get a divorce from the pope or start murderin'.

You probably accepted the after-betrothal marriage proposal without reading. It appears that currently, after the future bride and groom grow up, AI proposes marriage which benefits it the most. It means usually regular marriage for your daughter and matrilineal marriage for your son.

To prevent that, just don't accept AI marriage proposition, just offer it the marriage you initially agreed to.

Sure it's a bug: the prince was betrothed by his king father at an early age, and when he came of age and married, with his father still in charge, it suddenly turned into a matrilineal marriage--off he went. What was a standard marriage flag suddenly flipped to the matrilineal flag.

I read. I always, always read when marriages pop up in this game, having discovered long ago what happens if you don't. ;) No, dear old dad the king was never approached with that popup message from the princess' side about "Won't you please switch it matrilineal?"

I misunderstood you because you said "my ruler", which made it sound like your character had a liege above him. If your character was in charge, then it does sound like a bug. You should try to reproduce it though, with a save, because it sounds like something most people will assume is user error.

I reported this bug back in 1.03. As said, read the popup carefully and decline the marriage, then set it up again as an arranged marriage. I think you do take a small hit with the opposite ruler for breaking the bethrothal, but it's minor compared to the consequences otherwise.

It caught me out a few times.

I don't know how this is meant to work, but it's definitely bugged. Simply because at the time of the betrothal it is possible to choose between a matrilineal or patrilineal betrothal, but later that isn't respected.

Here's a possibility. I betrothed my son/heir to a young woman who was second in line for a county. I didn't realize between the betrothal and marriage that both her brother and her father died. When it came time to tie the knot, she was already a countess. Although the marriage remained a normal patri-marriage, my son still left to be with her in her new demesne. He returned with her when he inherited the duchy.

Could this be what happened to you?

I wonder which heritage the children have? Him moving, because he doesn't have his own lands is WAD. His children becoming the offspring of the Female House would be a bug. Tell us, were the children of your Dynasty or hers?

No. He was the prince and heir to the throne. His betrothed becoming countess doesn't suddenly take precedence over his title, or change a patrilineal arrangement into a matrilineal one.

EDIT: I've had this happen once again, since I started this bug thread. Fortunately, I'd saved before going to the wedding. The first time, it suddenly became matrilineal. The second time? No, it remained patrilineal. Definitely buggy.

It doesn't matter if he's prince and heir to a throne. Neither of those things bestow him with rank. If his betrothed becomes a regnant countess then she most definitely has precedence over him as far as where they are going to live. The only thing that matters for those purposes is who has what land under them right now. Being a prince and heir without a landed title makes him the equivalent of any other courtier. The only time that the marriage type has any bearing on where they live is if both of them are unlanded.

If your heir was in your court, then you definitely just clicked yes when the notification to marry matrilineally came from the duchess.

If your heir was not in your court, then yes, the AI probably accepted the duchess's last minute offer for a matrilineal marriage.

With these marriages, the duchess (or countess or whoever) will always send a last minute request to change it to matrilineal when she comes of age. If your heir (or whoever you're marrying off) is in your court, then you can decline this and proceed with the marriage as it was planned (patrilineal).

IF the person leaves your court after you arrange the betrothal for them, then you cannot refuse the matrilineal request and the AI may take the female ruler up on her offer.

Either way, I don't believe it is a bug. I've made these marriages many, many times. Yes, I made the mistake of accidentally accepting the last minute matrilineal offer myself, but if you keep the male in your court, then you should be able to refuse or just ignore this offer every time it comes up.

Also, I've had 6 year old Duchess betrothed to my second son, standard marriage. When she reached 16, she tried this nonsense and instead of responding, I just sent her the request for the original contract. After that my second son moved away, his wife was his liege and the marriage was still patrillineal. Him living in her court as her husband didn't change the fact that her children still came out, with my Dynasty shield. :)
