So, i've just discovered that with Auto-Generate Designs on my mining, research and frontier outpost stations automatically upgrade and get new shields and reactor; is this WAD?

BTW I'm using the beta patch 1.2.0

If this is WAD, why can't we have a designer for mining stations just like the one we have for ships? It would be more interesting in my opinion.

Wait are you suggesting that if I have Auto Generate Designs turned off then my stations won't update? I'm also on the 1.2 beta.
Yes, with Auto Generate Off your stations won't update. I hope they'll give us the ability to design our stations, just like they did for troop transport who had the same problem.

I'm going to disagree on this here. This seems like an excessive amount of micro-management and would clutter the ship designer. I suppose I wouldn't mind if that thing had some organization, but otherwise having the game auto-upgrade to intelligent options would be good with me. The power of a mining station is basically irrelevant past the super early game where they won't be using anything but starting technology anyway.

Well, the only thing keeping you from designing them is the 'is_designable=no' in the normal files. So switch it to 'yes' and be done with it. Hopefully they will, if not, then flip it yourself. It's not like it'll change much, given their light armament(One Small slot and three Small utilities isn't going to do much, even if it's a Gamma Laser backed up with Hyper Shields or similar tech).

I hope you realize normal people don't go digging through game files making mods right? I am much more comfortable making ship designs than hacking crap I do not understand.

That said I believe one can still design their own ships with auto design on without affecting his custom designs. So the only problem which isn't much of an issue would be the inability to upgrade initial ship designs to a custom design. This would require deleting an auto design.

I'm not a modder either-not in any real sense. I barely understand the language, and can only do minor poking and prodding. And this is something that is also rather simple(It's all mostly in plain English, and most everything is commented for clarity). I nearly broke CK2 one time, and nearly screwed up Stellaris(No Vir, no first contact events) trying to make a minor change, because I did not understand what I was doing. (I still don't, really.)

Still, it's often worth poking around in files. You never know what turns up, or how complex or simple something can be.

I need to be clear though: I agree with making this baseline. Let the stations be designable from the off. Let us put what we want. Hell, go with this:

*Imagines pirates*
"Yar a defensless mining station lets have at them!"
"Sir! We're detecting Tachyon buildup!"
"Tachyon~OH SHI~" ~lanced~

It'd be insanely expensive, but it'd be something to spend on when the minerals start pouring in. If someone wants to keep a wing or 10 of fighters on every Mining Station, let them.

Somebody mentioned on a Wiki Discussion that you could apparently enable all stations (inlcuding spaceport, but that is a special case) in the Ship Designer. Found the text here (2nd Answer):
http://www.stellariswiki.com/Talk:Ship_designer#Point_Defence

Currently the opnion is going towards de-arming those stations, however. They tend to interfere with moving Fleets too much, especially with the increased range. But even with the upgrades, they can not do squat against the enemy. And then you consider that you propably want those stations to stay intact for your takeover/Puppet Government.

I think they only had a small or medium slot. Not big enough for a Lance - yet.
But there are some realy nice small and medium weapons too, lategame.

RIP the dream. *Settles for extra-dimensional weaponry*
Actually putting those guns onto them might be an issue too. After all they do leave wreakage that can be salvaged. You might end up buffing enemies that come for you.

And another good argument to just disarm these stations entirely.
