Past sunday I took the plunge. Installed steam, purchased AoD, downloaded it, and then copied over the entire installed folder to a different drive and unpacked the 1.07 patch from this forum to get rid of the steam startup stub each time I want to AoD. Quite annoying thing, as it shows me the 'CD' key each time, telling me that I need to enter that string once the game starts, but it never asks me to do that. But I digress ...

Being a long time HoI 2 fan (doomsday, actually), I noticed something immediately after starting the stock 1936 scenario as Germany. The auto-leader assignments that AoD had applied were a total mess. In Doomsday, I got used to this function doing an actually top notch job most, if not all of the time. Leaving me to hand pick only a few commanders myself (mostly winter specialists for infantry, for the russian campaign, and old guards for garrisons).

However, what I saw AoD doing was quite a shock. Over half of the assignments were major generals, while the stacks were 3 divisions in size. Naturally, all those armies flaired up in red. It even, stupidly, assigned a lt. general to my headquarters unit. Which then, obviously, complained about not being able to function as it had no full general or higher as commander. The only choice I could live with was von Manstein as commander of my panzers.

So, what gives? Has the original auto-assignment routine from Doomsday been replaced with a new, malfunctioning algoritm, or am I doing something wrong? I'm not exactly looking forward to manually assigning commanders to each and every unit I'm building.

I can't answer the precise question you ask but wondering why you did not install v1.08? Not that it auto-assigns leaders any better I think, but for other reasons. I prefer doing leaders myself, so no problem for me. Doubt you are doing anything wrong but you are using an older patch than is possible.

Downloaded 1.08 last night, but I see a lot of mentioning about crashed with 1.08 in the subforums, so I'm a bit hesitant.

Crashes were common before 1.08. From 1.08 on crashes seem to happen near never. I still new a few tricks to enforce CTD, but they have not much to do with regular gameplay. 1.08 also implemnted some changes in how AI handles leaders, so maybe it changed autoassignment, too.

I'll give it a spin tonight then. Spent yesterday evening to get the scenario editor to play nice with the AoD extensions.

Concerning new game load crashes --

Go into the game folder and rename avi "avi_old". Binkplay was a common cause of a crash. All this does is to disable the startup movie.

Also -- go into settings file and change width and height as shown below. You can change it to something else later that also works but this too is often the problem.

1024 #Width
768 #Height

I was one of the ones who had mentioned that before, Concluded it was my laptop and not anything wrong with 1.08. In fact, I made a point of first comparing how crash-free 1.08 was compared to 1.07. But then eventually I got a crash on 1.08 so then I mentioned that. In my experience 1.08 much better than 1.07... and really can't compare them because the crash differences are maybe more to do with personal computer differences than anything else. (?)
