Past sunday I took the plunge. Installed steam, purchased AoD, downloaded it, and then copied over the entire installed folder to a different drive and unpacked the 1.07 patch from this forum to get rid of the steam startup stub each time I want to AoD. Quite annoying thing, as it shows me the 'CD' key each time, telling me that I need to enter that string once the game starts, but it never asks me to do that. But I digress ...
Being a long time HoI 2 fan (doomsday, actually), I noticed something immediately after starting the stock 1936 scenario as Germany. The auto-leader assignments that AoD had applied were a total mess. In Doomsday, I got used to this function doing an actually top notch job most, if not all of the time. Leaving me to hand pick only a few commanders myself (mostly winter specialists for infantry, for the russian campaign, and old guards for garrisons).
However, what I saw AoD doing was quite a shock. Over half of the assignments were major generals, while the stacks were 3 divisions in size. Naturally, all those armies flaired up in red. It even, stupidly, assigned a lt. general to my headquarters unit. Which then, obviously, complained about not being able to function as it had no full general or higher as commander. The only choice I could live with was von Manstein as commander of my panzers.
So, what gives? Has the original auto-assignment routine from Doomsday been replaced with a new, malfunctioning algoritm, or am I doing something wrong? I'm not exactly looking forward to manually assigning commanders to each and every unit I'm building.
