So what are your thoughts on the different authority forms?

I only played as dictatorial and imperial, yet. And as far as I can tell dictatorial enables you to pick your leader which can be useful, but imperial makes this faction that wants a cast system, an imperial authority and govenors in every sector happy which means free influence if you are authotarian.

Slightly confusing as to what (Ethos, Authority, or Civic) that leads to different set ups. Like, Blood Court, Martial Dictatorship, Holy Tribunal. If you're trying to set up something specific it's hard to do without flipping between a bunch.

Though going Imperial and militarist makes the intro text seem like a Dictatorship or Military Junta happened and not an Imperial system.

Granted, I'm picky about how I want each of my empires to be so maybe it's just me.

Well, not that much but as I said Imperial is a flat influence boost to autoritarians due to this one faction and everly little thing can help so maybe there are more of this hidden benefits to some of those.

Me too. I do miss the (relatively) free selection of my government type.
Do I want to be a military dictatorship today or a monarchy that cherishes its knights?
An oligarchy ruled by corporations and money-families, or the scientific elite, or admirals and generals?

If you're picky like me you can find what leads to what gov't and so on in the files here Stellaris\common\governments\00_governments.txt Just open the file and read through (I wrote everything down for use later; though I wouldn't be against something in game that helps with this)
