Because this come up in another thread I thought it would deserve its own thread, anyhow Austria's setting in 1444 is interesting and think that EU4 has ability to portray it just fine. Austria owning all of "von Habsburg" land in 1444 and being the Archduke of Austria, but also the Holy Roman Emperor is just wrong. Current Archduke of Austria should be Duke of Styria and the Holy Roman Emperor (because he was already elected as King of the Romans), because he is regent for his kinsmen (Dukes of Tirol and Austria) Tirol and Austria should start as vassals of Styria, because Frederick's brother Albert was supposed to be co-ruler of Styria and Frederick doesn't have any children I think that Albert should be his heir.
To make sure it would make sense, I fitted historical events to fit EU4.
1444 - Hungary tries to force Styria to release Austria
1446 - Hungary and Styria make white peace, Styria releases Tirol
1450 - Hungary tries to liberate Austria, but fails
1452 - Austria successfully rebels from Styria, Austria and Hungary form a personal union
1453 - Personal Union between Austria and Bohemia is formed
1456 - Allied to the Pope Austria, Hungary and Bohemia join a war against Ottomans, Hungary accepts particularist demands and pretender rebel (by Mátyás Hunyadi) in Hungary starts
1457 - Archduke of Austria dies, negative prestige causes Hungary and Bohemia to break free while Styria gets personal union with Austria and uses "Reunite Austria" decision to form Austria.
1458 - Pretender rebellion (by Albrecht VI von Habsburg) in Austria starts and occupies Linz.
1462 - Pretender rebellion is defeated
I don't think it would railroad Austria too much. Styria as emperor isn't that much weaker from current Austria, and if Styria isn't able to integrate Tirol and Austria, Styria will conquer them.
