Playing as Prussia, Austria is up at rank 2 in term of industry by the early 1940s, despite two wars of hegemony. Where is Austria getting the money for all of this industry?

Playing as Austria, two things you notice are the fact that they already start with a very good industrial tech and they get some gold rush in provinces (in my case, 2).

that's weird, as I usually play austria and I was going to say its industry just got ridiculously more difficult in AHD (with insane state capitalist costs). not like austria is terribly strong otherwise; was going to mention how crap that factory cost change was for the austrians.

what policies are the austrias you guys are seeing following? interventionism I guess, because it's AI?

i noticed it in every game i wasnt prussia ..... austria seems way overpowered they should be the weakest in the area as historically they lost alot

Disagree. In 1836 and 1861 things were not as severe as you suggest. I don't see any reason for industrial decline in political inertia in later years also. Capitalists' amenity is obvious because all they need is money due to low tax (possible for every State) and resources. The latter are brought by a great variety of RGOs in Austria (unlike Sweden). Plus Austria has industrial school and Austria's AI is biased towards useful techs ;). Everything seems consistent to me.
Russian 'education' pales in comparison with Austrian one. This is applicable all througth the era exept maybe for Bosnian and Croation territories of Habsburg Empire.
Austria is a bear sleeping on its gold sacks. If certain States (Prussian and Italy :ninja:) fail to gain what they claim then let them crumble.

Does AI Italy really claim the Habsburg Italian domains? We need France to back up this claim. Some kind of missions or foreign policy goals (Napoleon III's Europe of Nation States idea etc.)

Won´t argue about the unrest part, see my post - the thing is how to simulate those properly. PDM creates a free Hungary by event, for example, which is mostly fine IF Hungary doesn´t become independent 90% of the time. Nationalism should be more virulent, the question is - how.

To be fair, hungarians would have succeeded without the russians. In game terms that means that they should break free 90% of the time IF Austria doesn't call in her allies.

It is impossible for AI because no allies call option is evident in case of rebellions. Giving military access to AI-controlled ally does not work per se.

I have finished a few games, and Austria (and Austria-Hungary) seems to do quite well. In most games it is around rank 4-6 and has a large industry.

But I am not sure what causes this... I guess I will have to play AUS myself. :>

Well, looking at what they have, Austria seems well suited to industry. Large population, decent spread of domestic resources, good starting prestige.

If Austria really focuses towards useful economic technologies in the beginning, then a high industrial score is evident and not misguided at all (at least in the beginning).

One must not forget that e.g. the construction of the Semmering Railroad with all its bridges and tunnels in the late 1840s was regarded as a true masterpiece of industrial and technological workmanship.

Austria had an enormous potential in the beginning which wasn't (and also couldn't be) used, the decline therefor began in the 1860s and afterwards...

I don't think so, as soon as Radetzky was finished with the Revolution in Northern Italy, he and his armies would have finished off the Hungarian Revolution. The Russian Intervention speeded things up. Taking Vienna in '48, helping the Revolution there would have helped the Magyars.

Seen as I'm playing an Austria game now I thought I'd interject here. I agree that nationalism doesn't hit Austria probably as hard as it should, but the industrial score is in no way overpowered. I didn't rush industrial techs like the AI, and instead I'm now feeling the pinch as a result of that. Maintaining a position at number 3 only by a relatively slim margin (though you'd be surprised at the GP line-up of who's who).

I think Austria's industrial capacity is heavily research and policy dependent. Usually I'm the biggest fan of state capitalism but I've just gone L-F for Austria after 25 years of state capitalism in the hopes that it'll produce some improvement.

At some point in the mid 1870s in my current game Austria's industry score dropped from 360+ to 50ish. I don't know what the hell happened to them.

In my current game as the German Empire I have taken Bohemia and Moravia from Austria. Italy has also taken Lombardia from them. THis had the effect of improving their industry (!) from about 650 to now 777, better than mine! Very odd...

The main problem is too much assimilation in the game. There was almost no assimilation irl in the Austrian Empire or the Ottoman Empire and the game doesn't take that into account. There needs to be a nationalism modifier that lowers chances of assimilation hugely if pops live in a home province of their home country(Croatians in Croatia, Serbs in Slovenia, Bosnians in Bosnia etc.).

The other problem is that the chance of demotion is too high. That's why you see Austria shooting up in industry after a war because unemployed farmers/laborers demoted to craftsmen in occupied provinces. Social mobility wasn't that high in Austria at the time. If you were a farmer(aka serf) you couldn't just get up and move to a city or town and get a factory job. There were political forces keeping you from leaving the countryside and forces keeping you out of the cities. You pretty much had to deal with what you were born into.

The game could be improved greatly by factoring in social mobility somehow.

Playing as Germany:

Conquered half of Austria (I am at 170 infamy atm) + occupied them completely 4 times.

They still have the second highest industry (after mine and I have conquered half of France, half of Austria and the Polish and Baltic Russia)

They won the Second Schleswig War.

Also, while I understand that not everyone (me included!) have English as their first language, please take some more time to formulate your messages a bit better because in its current state, your post is hardly readable :/

Edit: that's especially true when I read that you are a Brit ;) sorry for the off-topic.

Has anybody tag switched to check what's giving them such high scores? I'm playing a game as Austria currently and I have pretty mediocre industry, and I'm struggling to even reach positive population growth...both France, NGF and I have had declining population even though we all discovered Medicine...
Same deal here, It's about mid 1860's and the state with the most factories is a 4-factory Osterreich.

Does AI Italy really claim the Habsburg Italian domains? We need France to back up this claim. Some kind of missions or foreign policy goals (Napoleon III's Europe of Nation States idea etc.)

Unlike prussia, they don't get the acquire core of union cassus belli. So the AI has no reason to try even if they're allied to france and in a war with austria where they're winning.
