I'm playing Austria, and I have an issue: Ever since I inherited Burgundy, I'd been planning to release the Netherlands as soon as their nationalist rebellions start, so that I'd have my own pet major trade power. But when the rebellions started, I couldn't actually find a way to do that. The rebel armies had the Netherlands flag next to the black and red, but when they took a province they didn't add a Netherlands core, just another Flanders or Holland one. With releasing Netherlands apparently impossible, I moved to plan B: Release Holland and feed them all necessary provinces. But that didn't work either: Holland refused to buy any province, as there's a -1000 "The province is part of the Empire and you're the Emperor" modifier. This modifier doesn't appear anywhere else, I was able to sell Augsburg to Bavaria immediately afterwards.

So is there any way to actually create and have Netherlands as a vassal, or should I be content just with collecting whatever scraps France and England let flow to Antwerpen?

Can't you just release Burgundy?
Ofcourse, but Burgundy doesn't colonize.

You should leave (some of) the provinces they sieged alone and eventually the Netherlands will proclaim independence (after three years iirc). Then you'll be at war with them and you should just grant them independence. Wait for the other dutch countries to join them, then diplovassalise them, which should be doable for Austria.

Alternatively you can win their war for independence and make them a vassal in the peace deal, but I think the other dutch countries won't join them in that case. They'd still colonize, but wouldn't have a good home base to work with.

Only seen them do it once myself, in games at least, there's always a Burgundian Inheritance. Ofc, the Netherlands are a superior trade power.
Oh, and it wouldn't really help anyway since the point was to get more trade into Antwerpen. Giving up all of your own land there probably wouldn't make sense in that case xD

Though I fear releasing the Netherlands for that purpose probably wouldn't help either since they would probably end up the dominant power in the Antwerpen node before they really focus on steering more trade in.

Thanks for the answers guys, but releasing the Netherlands might not have been as good an idea as I thought. I just realised you get half of a vassal's tax income and not half of everything. Kind of a prolonged brainfart on my part.

And even the secondary benefit of having a strong naval power under my thumb isn't important anymore, as I accidentaly PUd Spain a bit after posting here.

It's ok, Netherlands can put together a ridiculous amount of mercs with that income and NI's.
