Ok, so I was playing my first "real" game as Prussia and I make it all the way to the mid 1860's, then I get an event saying I can go to war with Austria. I pick it because thats what historically happened and Austria has about 10 armies of about 300,000 men each!!! Even with the difrules cheat i couldnt win against Austria, i only had 18 divisions in my reserve.........this isnt right...any suggestions?

not knowing nothing about the game, you state that you can go to war.

So choose no?

or are you forced to do so...well in that case the choice for War may be an Austrian war sentiment,

I think it sounds just good that AI seems to build strong armed forces, I like to have some challenge. Wouldn´t easy solution be to simply lower the number of troops game displays, without changing any variables?

Its not good for two reasons:

1. Unless the events are fixed or seriously modified, you have to go to war on schedule as Prussia to unify Germany. Its extremely difficult, requiring nearly perfect play, to defeat both France and Austria in that period. In my three tries so far, I've only done it once, and that required holding Paris desparately while France was destroying my armies in the Rhineland.

2. Not simulating the weakness of France and Austria mean that a Prussian AI player is not likely to unify Germany. With Austria and France all out building military, their higher manpowers mean they can swamp the Prussians (who only have 14 million people in the 1836 scenario).

3. The uber-Austria makes unifying Italy impossible for the AI. I've never seen it attempted. Twice Two Sicilies gave up immediately, making a White Peace with the Papal States and once Sardina did nothing before ceding territory to Austria.

There are some balance issues out there. The simple fact is the game needs to be "easier" to make it more historical.

Maybe Austria is too stable? I've played with Austria and after getting few factories, railroads etc. there is no power in Europe that could defeat me. Except some grand alliance like Russia-Germany-France.
Is there any events that could make Austria a little harder to play?

Yeah...I suppose nationalism isn't modeled very well? As time goes on perhaps the militancy of all non-Germans/Hungarians should increase steadily depending upon what you do. The collapse of Austria shouldn't be inevitable...but it should be likely given what it was.

It is strange since they went to all the trouble of putting all the ethnicities in the game that it doesn't seem that they followed through and made it challenging to play countries with many minorities. From what I've seen (uninformed without Victoria, is coming tommorow) Austria just as stable as an ethnically stable country is...

True, but one shouldn't think of 1914 too much. Ethnicity wasn't the main problem for the Austrians in their war with France in 1859 or with Prussia in 1866.

In my first post I only commented AI, which seems to be quite good. Though, I must agree that Austria looks like being overpowered.

I would say that problems Austria had in real life could be simulated with less capable army (multiethnic background of troops caused very real problems), and lesser ability of country as whole to withstand stresses of war (I mean they should be prone to rebellions etc. after prolonged fight). Economically Austria, if my memory serves me, did decently.

Maybe there should be more 'problematic' Austrian events in between the wars... like, the player would have to make choices in the inter-ethnic bickering at least in the Austrian part. Those choices should either increase the militancy and consciousness of the various peoples (Germans included!) or cost the player lots of cash and twist his domestic policies against his liking.

Austria's politics were totally deadlocked in the years before the first World War (their parliament didn't even meet any more)...

Maybe you don't even need to tamper with the Austrian armies if you can make domestic politics difficult enough for the player.

10 armies of 300k men each = 3,000,000 Austrian soldiers. That sounds very ahistorical. Something is very wrong there.

Austria is definately too strong. Sardinia has absolutely no chance to beat them in a war. In my recent game Sardinia went to war against them with France, and Russia also went to war with them at the same time. (they had no allies). They overran Sardinia in about two seconds, proceeded to the gates of Paris, and at the same time advanced deep into Russia.

I'm getting shomped by them...they had 57 in war exaustion and not A SINGLE rebellion.

I only had 23 and I got rebels running al over the place.

Once Austria had 100% and they did not get many rebillions...realy when your at 100% you are screwed(or should be) rebelions in every province, armies defecting and money going down....
