I play for Austria. Year 1585. Ironman. Already passed "Revoke the privilegia". There are no possible rivals. All enemies are destroyed by vassals very quickly. Ideas are full diplomatic, influence, religious and partly administrative. There are only 6-7 Protestants in the whole empire.
I follow conventional tactics: attack the enemy, core his provinces, and releas vassals. But in my opinion it is too slow.
I have two main questions:
1. How to inherit Hungary faster. Diplomatic reputation 12, Hungarian provinces about 13. The chance is about 30%. But I need it here and now to move up the mission line and get credits to the Balkans. Maybe exist special events.
2. If I free example the Montenegro, will it voluntarily join the HRE and will it become my vassal?
3. Is colonization worth it? My vassal, Friesland already begun colonization of ivory coast. Or deal with European countries first? HRE has not yet increased much compared to the beginning of the game

1. You just have to wait to inherit them and hope it happens soon or you could integrate them by combining the policy as well as the annex cost from spending papal points and from the mission tree.

2. Not sure if nations would be willing to join the HRE after you have revoked as even if you use expand empire CB on nations that you can use it on they will join the HRE but will not become your vassal after the revoked already happened.

3. It can help to start colonizing and making CN's in the new world and it would be a good idea to attack Spain/Portugal/England and maybe France later on so that you can let them colonize for you and you can just declare on them and take the provinces for yourself. If I'd continued my game I would have done this and just made small CN's while focusing on colonizing Africa and Asia then declared war once their CN's were bigger. Better to let them spend their money to colonize since they all have the idea's to do it better and faster than you and take from them later.

By attacking and annexing a nation and then coring the provinces to add them to the empire so you can release as a vassal is a waste of adm points and time since you will go far over your overextension and with the vassal swarm you want to be at war 100% of the time and in 2-4 wars at a time to expand faster (and you can only add European provinces to the empire anyways).

What I did and I think what most players do is take all the land you can and start giving these provinces to your HRE vassals who will then core them while you keep 1 of the provinces for yourself so that you have a border with another nation who you can declare holy war on as soon as possible. Make sure to spread the provinces out between different vassals so they won't go too far over extended also.

No reason to wait for inheritance when you are playing as Austria: with all the modifiers they get you can easily annex Hungary in a year

First of all, consider turning most vassals into scutage and divert trade - they just wonder and make a mess, especially those in the very inside of empire and OPMs.

About coring to release a vassal - it is a waste of admin points.

Instead release new countries in a peace deal (France, Poland, Lithuania, Ottomans have some countries to release), then use force expanding empire of them. They will be a part of empire, but not your vassal/ After you expand empire on many new tags, cancel Revoke reform and pass it again

Turning vassals to march worth it? Maybe Brandenburg(they have 20 provinces)

Well, modificators from policies, the papacy and your missions, as said before. If you look at missions, you can get some pretty cool reductions. Time them well and annexing Hungary will be no problem (and already shouldn't be that much of a problem with your 12 dip rep).

I think that making Brandenburg a march can be a good ide, due to their powerful ideas. If they are protestant you could help them forming Prussia for even more OP army.

But first of all, what are your goals? Want to try a world conquest? Something else? However, vassal feeding your swarm can work wonders if you want to expand the empire!
