Newer player here (350ish hours) but a completely noob Austria.

Year is 1475 and I have both Bohemia and Hungary in PU and only need Rome to stop Shadow Kingdom (Truce up in 1482).
My Question: is it a good idea to attack Burgundy to force inheritance? Will it probably trigger in time for me to declare on the Papal State day 1 of truce over to prevent them from joining a coalition? Just wanted some experienced opinions on the matter

It kind of depends what your goals are but in general I would say no, it is not worth trying to force it.

The Emperor only has a small chance (IIRC 10%) to inherit if it fires, though you can increase your chances by having a royal marriage.

You're better off just forcing them to release their imperial personal unions, and then pick up lands in a second war if they last that long. Any country in the empire will become your vassal eventually, anyway. And the more imperial states the more authority you gain to pass reforms.

Here is a great thread on Austria strategy, though some parts are very slightly out of date.

For Burgundy, the inheritance's criteria are detailed in the event's description (see the files, or the wiki). There's a date condition, Burgundy needs to be losing a war in a big way, and there's always an odd chance of you not getting the inheritance if memory serves.

Edit: stripped out incorrect bit.

Be wary that you no longer need Rome to avoid Shadow empire. You need the mountain province above it, which is part of Central Italy and controlled by Naples.
I am fairly sure that it is the opposite IIRC, as I played a Austria game not long after 1.24.1 came out, where I had to take Rome and not the Napolitan province

It is, in fact, Rome that you need. You do not need any Napolitan provinces. There is no need to get into a war with Naples/Aragon/Maybe Castile to stop the Shadow Kingdom.

I just did it yesterday; trust me - kill the Pope, pass the decision, wait for the event to fire to release the Pope, you're good.

If you can, avoid declaring on Burgundy, he's got a ton of forts and a vassal swarm. You have two powerful PU's, but it's a draining war, and could leave other fronts opened or weakened. You've done well with Italy, but don't try and force the BI. Odds are before they rework missions with the next update, Burgundy will still try and conquer Liege, which is a defensive war that drags you in, which is better than declaring it atleast.

A war with Burgundy should actually be fairly easy. You should have at least two stacks of full combat width. If you keep them close by and Burgundy doesn't have any great power allies, then they will avoid your army all together. They'll go siege Bohemia or another of your ally if you called one in. Just hit the Bourgogne first, then work your way up north. Don't be afraid to use mil power to break down walls of bad terrain forts assuming you have artillery.

Once again, I wouldn't even hope for the inheritance. Just get them to release their PUs. Worst thing that can happen is France declaring on them and taking more land.

Alternately, if you have the "transfer subjects" age ability and can afford the AE, steal one or two of the PUs instead of releasing them. Holland, for instance, has a good chunk of the English channel's trade power, probably enough to make collecting there competitive/better than in Venice. (Obviously, have to get them loyal enough to use "divert trade" safely.)

Burgundy does not have to be losing a war for BI to fire.

In my latest game as Poland, France was in 3 separate wars: Burgundy and its minions; Castile/Aragon/Naples; and England. Needless to say, France was losing badly. No Bugundian lands were occupied - in fact, they were winning handily. Then BI fired in 1499. After BI fired Spain got the HRE portion and France got the rest.

Inheriting Burgundy means France will hate you the entire time. They will end up desiring these provinces and pretty much make forming the HRE (if that's how you play Austria) a living hell.

At least that's how it was with earlier versions of the game.

I really would encourage foiks to check out that great guide I linked in the second post. I've been having a great time with Austria this patch.

Even with the nerfs they are still incredibly powerful and can own most of Europe in 100 years or less.
