The Second War of Austrian Passive Aggression
August 1628 We are building six warships in Ragusa. We failed in our colonization attempt in Table. We increase our monthly income to 54d to have the 59d to try again, needing the base for eastward movement. We note that we will be able to build impressive walls (level 3) in February of next year, so our income will be spent defensively in 1629.
1629 Tax 1017d We cross the 1000d milestone in tax receipts for the first time. In February Russia (Pskov) DoWs Poland (Hungary). Our old friend may fade before the Mamelukes do. No Incans are involved. In March Medium Fortresses, which hold 15000 defenders, become available. Corsica, Champagne, Ragusa, Istria, Posen, Transylvania, Carnolia, Romagna and Flandres (revolt risk now 0%) are all upgraded. Pest is increased to a small fortress. Happy news arrives from Table establishing our first colony. There is much rejoicing.
1630 Tax 1041d Piccolomini (4/4/3 zero seige) rises from the ranks of officers to command the army in Artois. Walls are improved to medium in Lorraine, Helvetia, Savoy, Milan, Styria, Odeburg, Tyrolia and Silesia. We send a colonist to Malaca, understanding that their survival is a 50/50 proposition (46%). We do not need to build Table into a city, and we do not have another good destination between the two locations. Our thoughts turn to capturing parts of New England in north america, as well, and the Azores from Portugal in the next war. In February heartbreaking news seems to arrive in an odd way, Spain declares war on the Inca, and Poland joins her in the declaration! On second reading, the Poles have joined the Inca, and our age-old alliance is intact. Spain has not called on us to fight the Poles, however. In May Poland gives 44d and cedes Mozyr and Belograd to Russia. The Poles are disintigrating before our eyes, they pay 55d and cede Lithuania and Belarus to the Teutonic Order in August. We failed to colonize Malacca. Come the new year we will try again. As we watch our forces fight the fairly frequent revolts we note the improved appearance of our troops. The men consistenty fight with long guns. Truly this is the modern era.
1631 Tax 981d
Our income suffers from the many revolts. Six more ships ordered in Ragusa. Colonist sent to Malacca, which will eventually be a safe launching base for troops in the far east, distant from the major powers in India [I did learn some things playing Portugal: the east is rich, and Yanam is vulnerable]. In March rebels in Ragusa appreciate our new walls as they hide behind them, but only after burning the keels of six warships. Portugal (Venice, Knights, Scotland, England) DoWs Turkey (Wallachia, Crimea, Cyrenaica). In April the same well-meaning but overzealous diplomat improves our relations with Sweden from most hated to soon-to-be-most-hated. The man has tenacity however, and is promoted to Spanish ambassador (RE: relations with Sweden increase by 25 to -175 again). In June the Inca are annexed by Spain, again increasing our ally's income. Perhaps the Poles will now ally with China? or the Iroquois? We send 22/5 on five warships and fifteen transports headed to Table, we will lose some but not all on the way. Our preparations are abandoned, for now, as France (Sweden, Denmark, Teutonic Order) DoWs Spain, and we of course join in the fun. On the other hand, although we are at risk to French ships, we can use Spanish ports. Our force of 23/0/149 in Ragusa has yet to dent the fine new walls there.
July 1631
Piccolomini takes his force of 28/0/130 and moves on the Isle de France. Col Moravia, with 19/0/57 moves to Provence. General Gallas has 32/8/75 in Champagne, and will most likely split his force when he reaches Orleans. Col Salzberg with 7/0/114 moves into Berri. Sweden has 34000 men in Jyland, so Col "Mad" Max and his 20/5 are sent from Holland to Mecklenburg for a possible counter attack. Finally, Konnsteig takes his 26000 from Posen to East Prussia to fight the Teutonic Order. Our empire has many troops, but covers a large area and movement can be time consuming within our borders.
August 1631
Our troops finally board ship and all ships are sent to Andalusia in Spain, where they will re-board the right fleet and head to Table. With all ships we should win any battle on the way, and out of the Med the remaining ships should be safe. Col Konn splits his forces in East Prussia and beseiges Lithuania and Memel. Our seige of Paris goes well (0). We again fail to colonize Malacca.
September 1631
In Lithuania 12700 infantry face 5700 cavalry, we lose virtually no troops and kill some 5000. General Gallas sends 10/0/75 into a Normandy and heads to Auvergne with the remaining 21/8 to fight French troops being recruited in that area. Mad Max moves behind the Swedish troops now in Bremen to either fight the 15000 Danes in Holstein, or merely cut off any supply they might be expecting.
October 1631
The Swedes, now 29000 not 34000, reach Hannover but continue to march, while the Danes follow right behind. Mad Max is sent to Copenhagen, our empire will be defended by the troops we raise next year. General Gallas reaches Auvergne, and moves on Guyenne to meet the new French recruits. Our 12000 in Memel defeat 3000 new recruits there, but 2400 get away.
November 1631
Salzburg captures Berri from France. Venice (Portugal, Knights, Scotland, England) DoWs us, and Spain joins, perhaps we will take the Azores instead of going to Table. We are sure once we have Venice that the Venitians will give up any Portugese island we like. Col Salzburg sent from Berri to Maine. We note that we have taken Spain for granted of late (+128), we must not make the same mistake as we made with Poland. The Swedes reach Pfalz, and continue marching, while the Danes ignore Mad Max in Copenhagen (1) and follow them through. We think they may be headed to Spain, but are leaving a path of destruction behind them in Austrian Europe. General Gallas meets 5/10/50 French as the emerge from the academy, and defeats them in battle, killing 1000 men and one cannon, he hopes that reports of their flight to Gascogne are true, and pursues. Paris (-3) and Normandy (-2) proceed well. We order the small fleet back to Apulia, and the large fleet to stop briefly in Andalusia and then on to the sea of the Azores.
December 1631
Once again our triumphant armies march down the boulevards of Paris, with burning buildings casting a delightful glow along their path. Piccolini follows the 7/9/44, whom he defeated as they were recruited in Paris, to Champagne to protect our refinery there. The seige of Ragusa barely progresses (4).
1632 Tax 948d
We recruit 12/0/60 in Bohemia for the Teutonic Order war, and send another colonist to Malacca. We recruit 18000 in Austria, 19000 in southern Italy, and 3000 more on Corsica (infantry are again 11d). Piccolini defeats the French in Champagne, losing 8/0/5, killing 7/2/9, but dies in the battle. At least he died with the conquest of Paris to his name, his men follow the hated army to Lorraine, vowing to kill every last man. Maybe it's the enemy cavalry that is killing our leaders? The French fooled General Gallas and went to Poitou, he pursues them. Our fleet reaches Andalusia and heads on to the Azores with the troops in high spirits now that they are accustomed to life at sea.
February 1632
Piccolini's men defeat the French again and pursue the remaining 0/2/32 to Pfalz. Wallachia (Turkey) DoWs us, Spain joins and we are reminded that we have not sent anything to Spain. For that reason, and to recruit troops in the south, we take a loan. A personal gift is barely noticed in Madrin (+126 to +128) so we consider a state gift, though the King is not adept at diplomacy, and we will not need Spain to join in any further wars. Therefore we recruit 17/6 around our capital. We decline Berri from France. Our fleet arrives in the Azores, and 20/5 unload to face some 27000 Portugese defenders. Col Shaffen, now in charge of Piccolomini's army, whittles the Fench down to 0/1/32 in Pfalz, and detaches 3000 to pursue, and heads to Bohemia.
March 1632
Teutonic Order now has 20/3/66 in Eastern Prussia. Salzburg captures Maine, and is sent off to Venice. Sweden captured Orleans, possibly confusing the final peace situation. 20/5 face 25/3 in the Azores while our fleet waits. Mid battle we learn that Sweden has taken Eastern Prussia. Apparently the Swedes send 1000 men and a General to every seige. Since France DoWed Spain and not us this will definately make the peace hard to handle, unless we take these both back.
April 1632
The battle in the Azores is very close and continues into April. General Gallas and his 18/8 face 17/17/50 French and Swedes in Orleans, we lose, killing 7/5/9, and losing 13/3 ourselves. We also lose in the Azores, losing 12/2 to the enemy's loss of 9/2, but defeated we reboard our waiting ships. We accept Berri and Maine from France, simplifying the war, but complicating the peace. We were wrong. We notice that, as France was the alliance leader, our losses to Sweden have been returned to us, making Sweden's luck work in our favor, as the French had fewer victories to talk about in the negotiations. Our only remaining wars are Venice et al and Wallachia (Turkey). Wallachia is moving on Ragusa, whose Austrian beseigers drove off other Wallachian troops.
June 1632
Our Ragusan force of 25/0/149 face 10/1/30 Wallachian troops after defeating another small force at the start of the month. Wallachia is sending its men in piecemeal. They reject a white peace (no stars). Mad Max, who we had unforgiveably forgotten in Copenhagen, finds that he cannot leave that city, or does he refuse? He tells us that no possible destination is "legal", which is surely a sign of his madness. Spain stormed Croatia and took it from Wallachia. Wallachia accepts our white peace offer. Leaving only Venice and friends to defeat. We will make it up to Spain someday, not soon (+197 to us now). We again fail to colonize Malacca. The King summons the court mathematician and simply frowns at him for an hour.
September 1632
Salzburg, who captured both of our acquisitions thus far, beseiges Venice with 6/0/114. We storm Ragusa finally, and take the province back, noting that the walls are unharmed. Noting only 5000 defenders in Venice we storm the city and take it. Our fleet drops the survivors of the Azores in Corsica, and heads to Apulia to possibly pick up more men for a Venetian Island operation. Mad Max sends a note saying that his men are demoralized, and that they are considering taking up residence in Denmark. General Gallas must travel from Munster to Lyon to put down a revolt. We order 28000 men to embark ship from Naples, we have not yet been at war two years so there is time to attempt to take an island or two. We send the fleet to Ragusa to resupply and then board some more troops and cannon.
1633 Tax 973d
We order eight new warships to replace those lost at sea, our fleet is down to 49/20 (we never get Galleys so we will ignore them) before new building. None ordered in Ragusa. Governors sent to many newer provinces, and another colonist to Malacca.
February 1633
Papal States (Persia) DoW us, which suits us fine as our Venice force was unemployed. Pappenheim with 35/0/147 boards ship from Ragusa, leaving 15000 behind, and will head to check out Aleppo, and if it is well defended, nearby islands. We change our minds and order all of the men in Ragusa to board, recruiting 3000 new defenders. Let our walls do the defending for a time. We decline a white peace offer from Venice.
May 1633
Pappenheim sees 35000 Papal and Persian defenders in Aleppo, and decides that taking Rome is worth the risk involved in a landing and subsequent seige. His 40/0/147, however, step ashore to find 37/13/70 present in Aleppo. During the battle we begin our seige of Rome. Perisa rejects our mid-battle white peace offer. Pappenheim wins the day, with only 20/0/147 remaining, but all but 25000 enemy lie dead. We suspect, however, that other Persians are nearby, though none are visible in adjacent provinces. We roll the dice still further, and storm Aleppo (2), taking the province far more easily than we would have imagined. Now if only we had more men in Rome. An army of 21/3 set out from our capitol to assist in Rome.
August 1633
Hungary (Poland) DoWs us, but this should be quick. Our 6000 brave men with 114 cannon in Rome try to storm the city, they fail, killing only 1000 defenders. Persia again rejects a white peace. We realize that we may need to pry Persia from Rome to annex. We suffer our annual failure in Malacca. Venice refuses to give Spain the two English California holdings Spain has taken for peace. Spain pays 250d and cedes Lincoln to Sweden for peace. A Papal force reduces Pappenheim to 11/0/114 in Aleppo, we must take Rome soon. We order Pappenheim to leave Aleppo to its defenses, and hope for good news in Rome. Russia DoWs Sibir. Venice refuses to cede England's Monterey (pop 1100) to Spain for peace. We storm Rome and capture it. On Novemvber 29, 1633 we annex Rome, and welcome his Holiness to a return to the purely spiritual realm. Venice pays us 55d for peace and we end our last-but-one war.
1634 Tax 1065d We expand the walls in Aleppo. This province will be difficult to hold, but it is worth a wall with 133,000 people. We send another colonist to Malacca, reminding ourselves that a coin flip does not always come up heads. The court mathematician points out that the coin has no memory of prior flips, however. In April, on the third try, Col Allenstein captures Magyar by storming the city. Hungary pays us 196d for the return of their capital, and we are at peace. The King is pleased with the war's outcome, although in the early going it was clear that the size of our empire makes defense a difficult matter indeed. We took two provinces from France, and annexed the holy city of Rome, making us the guardians of the Bishop of Rome for all true Christians throughout the world. Aleppo will be difficult to hang onto for long, but it, too, is a fine city. An advisor reminds us that we are still technically at war with Persia, which is more than of academic interest since we own Aleppo. Although we have defeated the Persians in the field (one star), we send the last diplomat in the capitol to Persia offering 250d for peace, which is accepted. We are fairly confident that the money will be spent fighting the Turk, and five years of owning Aleppo and fortifying it will be worth the price, if we get five years.
The King, with true humility, makes a pilgrimage to Rome to see the Holy Father. In his audience with the Pope His Holiness expresses regret for fighting Austria so many times, freely admitting his error, and calling Austria the one true friend of the Bishop of Rome. His majesty asks what Austria can do for Christianity. The Pope says simply: "You must free the Holy Land."
