Just wondering if anyone knows why the Australian distributor is selling Doomsday for $AUS70 (about $US50). It's just a bit silly when one can get the game from Paradox for so much less, and I also wonder if they're paying Paradox a percentage of each sale or some fixed sum based on the usual price. How do these kind of contracts usually work?

Doesn't Australia always do this? I think it's because very few retailers in Australia sell PC games so the average Australian has no choice.

Quite a few sell mainstream games; Civ IV, for instance, can be had for <$70, which seems to be reasonably competitive. But I'd agree that some niche games go for ridiculous prices (and it's hard to predict when or if ever they'll end up in bargain bins).

(Thanks Col; but if/when I buy it, I'll probably go for the Paradox download. I was just looking on the web and was surprised to find Doomsday's RRP is the same as HOI2's original RRP, quite different from US/European pricing)

Thats a bit steep, even for DD. Maxhomer, incorrect, Australia is surprisingly plush with outlets which sell PC games. Auran will most likely be distrubuting here in Australia.

Hey, apparently Australia has never had it so good. So good game (presumably), shame about the price.

Yeah I cant agree with you more the pricing here is terrible! Its pretty bad when you can order it from overseas and have it individually shipped here something like $25 cheaper then the distributer can do it. Where you go can make a big difference as some places dont seem to care how old stock gets and never discount it, the local Harvey Norman still has cossacks one sitting on the shelf for $100 along with a wide variety of antique games at full price(presumably its the new guys job to go round dusting all the pc games off).

It does seem to be the more niche titles are affect by high pricing, though there the most annoying as there the least likely to drop in price.

It can be very annoying to buy something full price here only to see other people getting it for a quater of the price elsewhere. Incidently being somewhat naive the first i realised this happened was when i purchased a game for 99.95, got annoyed with how buggy it was and how the features promised on the back werent actually in the game, went to the forum to complain (as you do) and was told by a number of people "what do you expect for 10 bucks" (US so thats what? $16 - $20 Aus).

WTF! That got internet shopping in my house going pretty bloody quick.

Can't help with the reasoning, but just so you know, Games Warehouse have Doomsday listed for $57.95.

THats for preorders only isnt it?

I remember seeing Space Quest II sitting on the shelf in rural Quebec in '99, a game that had been out of print for ten years at the time and for which the disks were no longer even compatible with the day's computers (5-1/4").

Reading your post was painful. Living in a "metropolis" of a million people is a bit of a perk, in that game stores in some neighbourhoods will have stale stock, but will actually drop the prices. I remember when I decided I wanted a copy of Victoria. My nearest EB didn't have it (this was a year ago - well past the game's hayday), and the poor girl at the cash called all of seven stores in-town. One had ten copies sitting in the backroom. Having more stores -> more inventory and discounted prices for stale inventory. That's how I've scored EU2/COTN and Victoria for $10 a piece.

Go to EB for games. Harvey Norman never reduce prices and their returns policy is awful.

The price is higher in Australia because so much of the shipped stock is destroyed by stray boomerangs or trampeled by Kangaroos. Also most people in Australia don't have electricity so they don't sell many copies of each game, just read above for other people who back up this point. They generate the power for their computers with foot generators. It just isn't worthwhile to play games like Doomsday which take a lot of time to play, you'd have to be in good shape just to finish one campaign.

If we can just cut the shit enuendo for just a minute. If you want to piss about go to the OT.

The point is, that it should be the same price as the rest of the world in real terms (after exchange), not hugely inflated like this. Plus, I do not have a credit card to order from Pdox, and secondly I am not going to download it because I prefer to pay money for a CD/DVD with the content on a physical element.
