No, that's the treaty of Tortesillas. Sucks, doesn't it?

The pope divided the New World into two halves, the western half (Mexico and Peru) for Spain and the eastern half (Brazil and Africa) for Portugal. As god-fearing Catholics, your colonists are violating the treaty and so can be attacked and annexed by Spain or Portugal (depending on where you are).

How to deal with this? Defend your colonies. The treaty eventually gets rescinded.

Sorry, that should be "Tordesillas". The spelling's a pain. It's one of the global events (you can find it in hugeevents.txt) and starts in 1505. Here in the forums we usually just call it the TOT (Treaty of Tordesillas), which doesn't do much for my spelling.

There's only a couple of ways to stop this. Either wait for an event in the 1650's the Treaty of Tolerance (I think tha'ts what it's called) which stops the treaty of tordesillas effects, become a protestant, or defend your territories. If you fortify them, then the AI won't usually take them over.

You should be able to see which provinces are affected by going into the Colonization screen - you'll notice Spanish (and Portuguese) shields over coastal provinces in the New World - that's their claim on those lands.

It's not usually a big deal in single-player games - the Spanish usually don't explore much north of Florida. If you stick to traditional English or French colonies you should be fine, outside the Carribean and Guinea. Another way to deal with the treaty is by changing your religion - only Catholics are affected. If you (or the Spanish!) are Protestant, Reformed or Orthodox, you won't need to worry about the TOT.

Large parts of the world are also exempt from the TOT, including northern North America, Indonesia and Siberia. You could always go for these places - or Australia, since the AI never colonizes there (although the Portuguese get shields on their provinces as part of the TOT).

To avoid this you could concentrate on colonizing the caribbean islands, though they are ToT, Spain will mostly leave them alone (still build walls though just in case!).

Alternatively you could arrange for Spain to have mil access through you, in which case they cant take the ToT provinces. Thias almost never happens, though you could edit it in the save game.

Also remember, in a war, if Spain takes the provinces, they get to keep them!

Also, if you are allied to Spain, they won't take your colonies. Same applies for Portugal. It may be hard or not always advisable to stay allied with them for so long, though.

So in summary:

1) Fortify the cities. That'll give you time to send your troops there before they take it over

OR

2) Keep troops in all the wrong TOT colonies, enough to win every battle

OR

3) Change religion to anything other than Catholic or counter-reform Catholic

OR

4) Be in an alliance with them

OR

5) If you're really lucky and they ask you, give'em military access.

Any of these will work. Go and show them they have no priority rights to unclaimed lands. That pope was a Spaniard, and it shows! :)

I am fairly certain that being allied is not enough, they need to have mil access.

As this question has been asked several times, with the same answers given, the consensus has been that an Alliance is sufficient as well.

Here in this forum we have another thing called the edit button, that prevents the need to double post. ;)
