I recently played a campaign as Cusco into Inca for the Sun God Achievement. After I reformed my religion and caught up in Technology to the Portuguese, I prepared to take their colonies. I was ready to fight Portugal and all their allies, but when I attacked their colony, nobody was called in, not even Portugal themselves. Is this supposed to happen, because it made everything much easier?

Colonial nations do not get their masters allies. The master can choose to fight you but doesn't have to.

Then i must have been really luck. After that i startet a few wars on colonies of spain and their junior partner france, which at the time would have beaten me into the dust, but nobody ever helped them.

You can usually enforce peace. Sometimes you get a junky bugged interaction where they can fight despite your truce, but as long as that isn't the case it's usually fine.

To the master, iirc, you aren't actually a war participant but work like a rebel. So he can walk his units over you like a rebel stack to help his CN but only the CN can peace you out. I don't know if the AI handles this well unless his army is already on the same continent or even in the CN already.

In my case, they didn´t handle it at all. They just watched as i devoured their hard work. Portugal actually had 24k units on the border of their colony, but never moved an inch. Spain didn´t even show up, when i attacked their colonies.

If you are a native and attack a colony you will just fight the colony not the overlord.
The overlord can join if you decline an enforce peace from them, in this case you could just peace out and take as much as you have war-score for before accepting the request.

In my playthru as Aztecs, I let the colonial nations colonize all the land and just took a few provinces from them once in a while so they wouldn't get too big. It was free colonizing for me. The European powers ignore you and let you take as much as you want. Strange mechanic and not at all realistic.

Colonizer + native interaction is a weird anti-compromise where the process manages to be simultaneously devoid of historical reasoning while also managing to destroy what gameplay it actually had > 2 years ago :/. It's not good for natives, and it's not good for the colonizers.

As long as you're a native, overlords don't get automatically called into wars when you attack a CN, although they can use enforce peace on you. Best strategy as a native is to attack the CNs the second they form, so you can 100% and full annex before the overlord has a chance to react.

Also if you don't full annex the CN, their overlord will attack you with reconquest (and doesn't have a truce timer)

if i recall correctly, you dont actually have to even be a native to get this, you just have to have your capital in a colonial region. I had a game about a patch ago where i moved my capital to Australia and was able to roll over all of south america with impunity.

Correct, also works for custom nations starting in the new world. Usually for old world nations you're better served annexing the overlord and just inheriting all their CNs that way though.

Correct, also works for custom nations starting in the new world. Usually for old world nations you're better served annexing the overlord and just inheriting all their CNs that way though.
true, you can get more for fewer wars that way, but if you are like me and would rather own new world land directly instead of through subjects, its useful to know that you dont need to actually fight someone to fight their colonies.

it does seem a bit odd though. I mean, Portugal for example not necessarily going to all out war because some tribe attacked Brazil makes some sense. Portugal not getting involved when a giant colonial empire that has arbitrarily moved its capital to Australia invades its colonies, less so. Forgetting that, think of what this means for freed CNs. I would imagine that if, after gaining independence, the US had invaded Canada, the british would probably have done SOMETHING about it. In the game's current state however, they cant.

Actually they can (enforce peace, which for subjects lacks the +100 requirement), it's just that the AI doesn't. Usually. On rare occasions it actually will.

They actually did. This is called the war of 1812. :)

I can confirm that no matter how powerful is a theorically ''primitve'' empire (like Aztecs and Incas with better tech than Europeans), the colonies almost never call for help.

The overlord CAN intervene. The AI just doesn't do it. Player nation can pretty easily prevent natives wrecking his CNs.
