I attacked a county which was a vassal of the Duke of Tavasts. However Duke of Tavasts didn't have any provinces. After defeating the count I took over his land and granted it to one of my duke vassals. I then had peace with the count, but I still have a war going on with the duke of Tavasts.

But as the duke doesn't have any province how can I ever end this war? I can't even send a peace proposal...? What can I do to get peace?

Since the enemy doesn't have an army nor province I guess I could just leave it at that, but I get events connected to war which is sometimes quite annoying.

Help

He must still have at least one vassal, likely his son. The AI will always revoke land of their vassals if they become landless, except their children. Without modding the game or using a cheat, there is no solution other than waiting for either his or his son's death, or for the 'Peace of God' event.
You can also try assassinating his son (if this son has no heirs the title will revert to him, so you can continue the war).

A cheat method is to focus him through clicking up his son's family tree, and typing 'die' in the console. When he dies his son inherits the title, so you can continue the war.

Since this bugs me a lot I wrote an event to take care of it automatically: here. You can add that to your current game and it will kick in about a month or two after you load your save.

Thanks for the hint. You are right! It turned out he had a count son in Greenland. So I "DIE" killed the son and then I could click sue for peace which the bastard then rejected :p But at least I'm now aware and the problem is solved. Thanks.

Can't you select the son, then select the ruler without land, click the shield and... I think you can conduct diplomacy. I could be wrong, but I think I recall doing it before.

Oops didn't think of that... Anyway now I have already murdered the son so it's too late unless if there's a cheat code to bring someone back from the dead :D

Still good to know. Will keep that in mind if there's a next time.

I have witnessed this with some female rulers, or a female ruler's husband if he loses a war and goes back to his wife's court.

That's what I do in situations like that. Though sometimes it can be hard to find the vassal, once found it only takes two clicks to bring up the leige's realm.
