Not sure if this is a EU2 thing, something about Beta or EEP. I'm playing 1.07b with w 1.4.1EEP, as Uzbek Khanate. For most of the game I couldn't send merchants to Astrakhan because 'I didn't have a port' (even though I had a clear land connection with Astrakhan), and after I conquered it my merchants don't make any profit. IE I have a monopoly there, but make 0 gold. Can that be remedied in any way?

Known EU2 issue. Only solution is to get a port. Any port. It does not make sense, but that is how it works, and as it is a bug usually affecting only a very few nations, it is unlikely to ever be fixed by Paradox.

I have experienced the same thing, but with Persia trying to trade in Tabriz and Alexandria.

It'd an issue of continents, so Persia should be fine trading in Tabriz. Alexandria should be a problem. If you really couldn't trade in Tabriz as Persia you have a real bug here. Unless your capital for some strange reason was in Europe (Kurdistan for instance).

What if I colonize some island for instance? Will that count as a port? It's absurd enough not to bother me :)

The port must have a land connection to your capital.
