Lets face it; AI allies are only useful as distractions. At best they'll open up some futile second front somewhere to draw away enemy divisions. At worst, they'll station a bunch of useless units on your front line and suck up all your supply. There is no way to actually coordinate with your AI buddies and there likely never will be. As the US, I always find myself liberating Europe alone.

This is a shame considering how important international cooperation was during WWII. I remember fondly in Darkest Hour being able to coordinate D-Day with a force of US, British, Canadian, and ANZAC corps supported by an airforce composed of many different nations. This was made possible because in DH you could assume direct control of all of an allies military assets. This ability should be brought to HoI4.

There should be some restrictions. Player should not be able to put foreign units under their own generals but they can put those generals under their own FMs. Players also should not be able to dictate what units the AI builds. Players should also be responsible for supplying foreign units if their mother country can't. There should be an option to allow foreign units to draw from your stockpile if their equipment is outdated compared to yours. The option to even do any of this should be off by default and disable achievements.

Obviously just being able to yeet an entire nations armed forces under your command would not be possible IRL, and it wasn't possible during the war. Ike had a Hell of a time trying to corral his allies. But in the end, I think it would create a better experience for the player. Given the dev's track record with AI, I feel this is the only way that will allow proper coordination between the player and their allied nations outside of multiplayer.

At the very least I'd like it if expeditionary forces were reworked to be more like volunteers but under the command of the nations they were sent to. That means they come with a general in a formation that the player cannot alter but can directly control and put under their own FM. This would mirror IRL instances of joint-cooperation like with D-Day where American general Bradly and British general Dempsey were united under the command of Montgomery. You should also be able to send fleets which operate the same way.

I’d like some more focus on co-operation too and I especially like your idea about generals, would be cool to be sent an army with a general you can’t do much about but have to put up with, maybe even with their own mini event chain like requesting supplies or suggesting their own plans. I guess IRL that was part of the fun for Eisenhower, trying to trade off between Patton and Monty all the time.

I wondered if rather than direct control you could maybe be involved in army plans and use some command points / political power to get a chance to adjust an allied plan. Not sure on the mechanics exactly but just brainstorming for now.

Would be kinda more realistic to say “hey you know this war we are fighting, it would be really great if you send your troops this way, or aim for this objective” rather than direct control.

could maybe tie into exile forces a bit too, don’t know.

I'm sure someone at Paradox is already thinking of this problem and has come to this solution and I can tell you now it won't work. Trying to prod the AI will be seen as a waste of PP or CP that hardly ever works. The AI is just too dumb.
