Ok, here's what it says in VickyWicki about assimilation...

Assimilation is judged per POP everyday. When conditions are met and certain period has passed, assimilation will happen. Consider there is a sandglass for each POP subject of assimilation. When all sand has dropped, the POP is assimilated. Sand is refilled when you restart a saved game or ownership of the province changes. Also, the falling process can be halted by various reason.

My Question is: How long is the wait before assimilation occurs? Is it different for each pop? If a new pop migrates and merges with an old pop, does the timer start over?

Ok that's more than one question but you get the idea

It all depends

what is your plurality

what is your national value

what is your political stance regarding citizenship (lim cit, full cit, residence)

what is the religion of the immigrant pops (same religion pops integrate faster than others)

and i am sure there are other factors.

ok, so for a specific example...

I'm playing Japan with a communist party in power (full citizenship)
I'm building factories in Japan, and converting Chinese pops to craftsmen (same religion). The pops are migrating to Japan as they are supposed to, and they eventually merge.

My problem is that I now control too much of China and am getting too many pops migrating at a time. With a full citizenship party in power, my assimilation cap for employed craftsmen is is at 10,000. Usually it is taking me about 2 to 3 months before a pop is assimilated and by then he may or may not have crossed the 10,000 threshold.

I haven't read anywhere about the affects of plurality and national value on assimilation, I thought they only affected migration?

I dunno about National Value, but plurality does affect assimilation speed. That's why POPs assimilate faster later in the game.

Also: I HATE the Chinese POP flood after you gain too many provinces. Solution: aquire diverse provinces so that you rarely get the same type of Chinese migrating in successive months. :D

These seem to be the factors that affect assimilation
Smaller more likely to assimilate (<300,<2000,<10000)
In north / south America
Not in Europe
Country is USA or Austrailia or New Zealand (yep that's right)
Lower class pop
Pop is employed
Full Citizenship party
Non-Residence party
Pop religion matches state religion
plus there's a random factor.

The more that are true, the more likely assimilation will occur and the faster it will happen. If assimilation has not occurred after about 4 months, it won't unless some factor above changes to make it more likely.

Contrary to the assertion earlier, plurality does not appear to impact assimilation.

Where did you get this information? I have never seen Australia and New Zealand included with the US in assimilation speed.

Smaller means faster, not more likely, IIRC...
And I'm still pretty sure plurality has an effect on speed.

Paradox is allowing people to license the code so that changes to their older games can be made by the community of players. I have done that as have others. I got my info from reading and navigating thru the source code.

I'm working on adding features (split all pops in a province or state with one button click is my current endeavor)

As to your question about speed, the engine seems to check for assimilation every 15 days for a given province. The likelihood of assimilating is much greater for smaller pops than larger ones. As a result, every pop gets checked every 15 days but the smaller pops are more likely so on average their chance to assimilate is higher and thus on average they do it quicker.

I was shocked by the Austrailia and New Zealand info too .. but they're right there in the code.

Yeah, I knew the source code was released. Wow, that's amazing information!

So chance = speed, in this instance. Ah.

Direct from the source code... that's why I hadn't seen it before. You should put this stuff on the Wiki. ;)
