I have seen lots of opinions for assimilation, but am I the only one who thinks it is not always a good thing?

It is that the amount of pops is more important than the actual size of population. This is why I would rather keep my minorities than assimilate them. It is good to have small 1000 - 5000 sized non national pops as craftsmen and bigger national 20 000 - 40 000 sized pops as clerks. If pops keep assimilating, you lose lots of pops and industrial potential at the same time. Another player on our multiplayer community also researched that non national pops give you exactly same industrial points as national culture pops. Certainly nationality matters in productivity, but still the amount of pops is more important than nationality.

I agree with you. If there are a lot of non-national immigrants, they tend to form large unassimilated POPs which is worse than national POPs. But with very limited immigration the non-assimilation model is better. Though for roleplaying reasons I always prefer assimilation. Nation-states for the victory! :D

Non-national pops can be really good in some cases. When it comes to research, for example. If your nation is entirely one culture, then this culture has to be divided into different classes (you can't have only clerks working in a factory), but if there are lots of non-nationals, then you will be able to promote all of your nationals to clerks or clergy without ruining the economy. This way, Oranje and Transvaal can get huge amounts of RP, since their culture (dutch) is a minority.
