I'm really curious as to how popular different Paradox games are compared to each other. How do games like Hearts of Iron, Europa Universalis and Victoria compare to each other in number of players or sales? Are the latest installments much more popular than the earlier versions?

If you page up this forum, you can see post counts for various game forums - see Eu3 leads the way, ahead of HoI3, and then other games come, CK2 being most recent but giving a good chase to Vicky2 nevertheless.

Hello, being one of the few forums where the game developers actually talk to fans, I can actually ask this.

I am trying to be a game designer, what do?

I am a sophomore at the Savannah College of Art and Design. My major is game design and I am concentrating on the aesthetics of such games. This means level design, graphics, a little modeling with Maya, and plot development though not restricted just to that. Personally, I am not a fan at coding, but I will learn the basics. I am just beginning my classes for my major. So, I really need tips or a bit of guidance.

Should I continue to learn about the basic visual programs like Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator?
What level of competence in coding would you recommend for a person who graduates from college (C++)?
Would most development studios (or Paradox) prefer a person whom can concentrate and be an expert on one skill or a variety of skills?

EU3 came out in 2007. Of course it has more posts than HOI3 or V2 or CK2. But postcount does not equate to revenue, and the correlation between posts and popularity is tenuous at best.

I may or may not have written this entire post as an excuse to use the phrase "tenuous at best".

Hitherto games released earlier also had more years and more expansions to sell extra copies.

Why does the forum appear differently sometimes? Usually it's the dark blue with thin rectangular frames that I like, but sometimes it becomes light blue with large bubbly frames.

I would like to know this too. Never happens to me. Anyone else?
You have a selection dropdown at the bottom left of the forum where you can set a specific template to be used. The top two ones are more standard vbulletin, perhaps one of those is what you get?

I'm really curious as to how popular different Paradox games are compared to each other. How do games like Hearts of Iron, Europa Universalis and Victoria compare to each other in number of players or sales? Are the latest installments much more popular than the earlier versions?

Later instalments do sell more, yes. I can't really tell you the specifics about sales, since that is a secret and all. I can tell you that post count does not tell the whole story. Without even looking at the numbers, I'm pretty sure HoI3 sold more than EU2 for example.

That is a tough question to answer, because it will all differ wildly depending on what kind and size company you plan to work for. Also, game designer is very hard to get into on entry level. If that is the plan, you want to aim for a bigger company that has junior game designers or similar.
Your education right now seems to make you a generalist rather than a specialist. That is good since game designers can need a little bit of everything, but don't forget to have something as your main focus and become really, really good at that. Photoshop is always good to know, Illustrator perhaps less (imho). Maya can help.
As for coding, you'll never become a good programmer on just one or a few courses, which is not the goal here either, so the reason for you to learn coding is more to get the concept and general idea, and to not be afraid of scripting.
I would expect a graduate from a game design education to be able to pick up our scripting language rather fast and not need a lot of hand-holding. I would not expect them to code stuff in C++, even it that would be an added bonus if they could do some small things. This applies to paradox btw. Larger companies tend to give you a much more narrow role, so there you would probably not touch the C++ code.

After all this education, make sure you have a portfolio that displays your best work. That will tell any employer way more than just looking at your grades.

What's so hip and cool about FTL, Space Rangers 2 did the same much better many years ago?

I haven't played space rangers, but looking at some screenshots, it does not really look like the same kind of gameplay?
I think people like that FTL feels so indie and hardcore. Plus, you know... Space.

OK, a new project has been released (and it's terrific, Their Finest Hour, congratulations), so it means we have a team free for other purposes... has it been decided yet what are they doing next? Maybe an expansion for Victoria 2?

When it comes to writing events, I am almost always inspired by various historical events or influenced by the book I recently read or am reading. Sometimes films or music inspires me, or web comics or TV-series. It also depends on the game. For Victoria II I took inspiration from the Suffragette movement and the Temperance League to create two event series. For CKII I was inspired by Robin Hood and what happened to kings, queens, noblemen and noblewomen during the Middle Ages.
