How did Paradox Interactive survive in the beginning?
Well...we were first called Target Games AB, and then at the end of 1999 part of Target Games formed a new company called Paradox Entertainment, then in 2005 we split off into PI.
For the first years it worked fine, we were part of a large company for the first 4 years doing RPG's, boardgames, etc, that let us create a computergames division.
Then those things kinda died, and we had to downsize.
What size was the team around 1999/2000?
Then the actual development team for EU1 was me (coder, designer, etc), as all other had been let go, or moved to another team. We were basically 10 at the company then. It was even worse a year later when another team was let go, and we were down to .. Me, Patric, Fredrik Malmberg, Dick Sjöström, Marcus Edström and our then CEO Theo Bergqvist, and we were starting working on HoI1.. We also had Doomdark joining the company in late 2000 as well.
Dick (3d artist) now works at Avalanche (3d artist) and Marcus (2d Artist) at King IIRC
How did Paradox Interactive acquire funding to develop Europa Universalis 1?
Own money, and some outside investment. Luckily Fred M was a shrewd negotiator and forced them to fund Europa Universalis to be allowed to fund Valhalla Chronicles.
Was it tough developing games in the first few years?
Oh hell yes.
Usually in at 8 am, and then took a taxi home at 9-10pm... and then I coded EU2 patches in the weekend cause I had no life.
Only one other developer that could program at all until 2003, and he was working 100km away from me (Doomdark)(
Was there any doubts or worries that Paradox Interactive may go defunct during the first few years?
So many times its not even funny. We tried to hide the scary times from the employees when we grow, but postponing salaries was very common for us in the management.
Luckily, stuff managed to become slightly more positive when we hired Fred to run the sales & marketing, and we started to self-publish.
There were some games we released where we basically got paid 0$ at some major markets. THANK THE LORD OF THE DARK FOR STEAM!
.If the original staff travelled back to 1999, would there be anything you would do differently?
1) Bet on certain sports events I know about.
2) invest some money & time into a battle.net/steam system & a world of warcraft mmo-game for my own enjoyment.
3) live a good life
