Wondering this, all Eu3/V2/HoI expansions were as extra games you bought granting you forum icon and possibly new avatars. Why stop this at Ck2? The Old Gods is same to Ck2 what Deus Vult was to Ck1; a big expansion that really made the game even more awesome! I know that every random DLC (some of them really silly, such as granting finally access to play rulers of other religions, which IMO should have been possible in base vanilla...) is not worth creating an extra icon, but the Old Gods should belong to the expansion category, not DLC one.

I guess you've missed the last two years or so of Paradox posts on this. At core, it means longer support for your game. In the EU3 model once each expansion was released, previous ones got no more patches, so in a sense you had to buy the new expansion to get further patches. With the DLC model each major patch is accompanied by a DLC that - simplistically speaking - pays for the cost to produce that patch, but the patch does not require the DLC to apply or work. So you are guaranteed to get bug-fix patches as long as major DLCs keep rolling out (whether you buy the DLCs or not), which has been over 18 months so far and I believe will go on for at least as long. The continuing revenue stream from the DLCs means longer life for the game.

I think the issue is with not getting a medal for the product and not how it is sold.

Because of limitations with the forum software we were forced to drastically cut down on usergroups and thus the medals that were linked to them.
Our new forum shell, Phase one of which has been implemented now separates the medals from the usergroups, therefore you may see more medals up for grabs, although there are still some issues with distributing codes and the like that are more beyond my control.

Well, yeah, I was kinda inactive for past few years. How it is sold doesn't matter as you say, I would still buy the product, heh.
But the lack of forum icons is causing me heartbreaking grief!

But since past Paradox games have had medallion giving expansions, I hope one day Ck2 will too.
Heck, for Eu3 you can get this many icons; Eu3, Eu3 CE, NA, IN, Eu complete, HttT, DW and Chronicles.
One game, 8 icons is kinda cool!

Its trivial to add.. But we canned it due to the nonsteam version.

All my savegames are synced with the Dropbox account, but it would be nice to have the official™ thing.

Because it would create a split among mods? Effectively, because I own a GG version of CK2, I cannot use a mod because it is only on the Steam Workshop? There is already enough fragmentation.

Incredibly good article about how some gamers tend to be quite... unrestrained about their reactions to games and developers. I know Paradox attracts a more mature crowd than most other developing studios, but have any of you ever experienced something like this?

It's not expensive actually, but I've already spend over 100€ on this game and all it's DLC!
Wouldn't it be just fair for people who bought both CK2 and EUIV to get the save converter for free?
And why does renaming characters and lands and looking pretty cost 5€ when part of the earlier can be done without the DLC?

Also in total, this game and all it's current DLC cost 147.69€ (DLC Collection not included (may be a 10€ difference))

Great Article, bang on in a lot of areas.
Lets just say a lot of our rules come from Experience.
We run a tight ship but those rules and our enforcement of them allows for the deep interaction between Paradox staff and the members, that each side values.
You can call me all the names you want as long as you do it in a PM and not the forums (Note that does not apply to my forum staff or to other Paradox Staff) There is only 2 things that will make me drop trying to reform you as a poster, threats to get legal action started, and threats of violence to me or anyone else, I do not tolerate either of those.
Having said that I think we are doing a great job of educating the members to police themselves. Even though our membership is growing at a rapid rate, the amount of problems and incidents is decreasing, especially if looked at on a per capital basis. That encourages me that things are headed in a better direction.

Good questions!

1: DLC is priced at a point where we think people will be willing to pay for it - and so far it's really successful - most gamers have little problem with it and buy tons of DLC that tells us the price is right for most.

2: Most of the DLC is putting optional or cosmetic - none of it is actually required for you to have a a great, deep and rewarding gameplay experience for hours and hours.

3: If you feel it's expensive - wait for a bit - our products usually go on sale sooner or later. The Showdown Effect is on sale for $1 right now over at www.humblebundle.com/weekly

4: A large combined sum in itself is not a problem - If we could produce twice the amount of DLC we would - you know why? because the vast majority of the customer base is asking for more and more content. We can barely keep up. It's understandable that it might seem daunting at cursory glance - but you're seeing the end result of a very popular game with a community with an insatiable hunger for more content.

Ultimately we're running a business that needs to make money - the more money we make the more games we can make.

If you feel something is expensive then don't buy it - you don't have to - vote with your wallet.
