Have you ever considered using a map made of a hexagonal grid with the province borders laid on top of it, to allow for malleable province borders/creatable settlements/easier map modding/etc?

Or, you know, just ask people to play Civilization instead. I hate to be blowing my own horn here, but I still think my idea is better; it is more unique and more viable. True, it will take longer to declare all the provinces as they are unique, but that's part of the charm!

I'm sorry, I didn't read your idea. I just thought that a hexagonal grid would make defining distances a lot easier (always 1 mile long, for example). Cuts down on the files needed just for the map.

I don't think the amount of files is a problem. Paradox games are not notorious for being enormous in size. Only their save games (and they don't even store the map!).

I am not certain how distance is calculated now, but I assume it is based on the size of the map. Sure, hexagons might be easier, but 1 mile (1.8km) in width? That's probably a bit too many hexagons. Because deep down the system still has to handle all these hexagons, even if we cannot see them individually. Then you say a larger scale like 10km or 50km, but then we get to a point where the map just turns into a hexagon-map and the reason why Paradox uses provinces to begin with.

So while you may think it would lower files needed for the map, each province would still have to be defined by the hexagons and even if we ignore that, the system load would be immense. You think there was a lot of provinces in Hearts of Iron 3; using a hexagon mechanism like this would result in hundreds of thousands of individual pieces, requiring the game to handle that much separate data at any given time.

Instead, I say create the small provinces, but incredibly small. Not 1km in size, bigger in areas where they are less needed and small in areas where they are much needed. As much I would try to remain unbiased, I do believe that Sahara does not deserve the full detail as say Southern Germany does.

In this scenario, you will have two types of provinces; mini-provinces (let's call them nodes) and regular provinces. A province is per default defined to a certain set of nodes. But it will be possible eventually to split up the provinces by their nodes or rearrange them.

There should obviously be penalties for doing stuff like that. In addition, the game could more precisely handle the location of peoples; by node. So if one or two nodes within a province has a rebellious people, they might split the province in two; or make their nodes join the adjacent province instead.

Armies will be per province, by technically stored in a node, but the most important node of a province. So imagine a province has 6 nodes, node 3 is the biggest and thus the army is technically stored there. So when node 5 and 6 split off, the army remains in the province. Had node 3 split off, the army would have moved into the new province.

Update: I know some of you are probably concerned about the amount of handling the game now has to do per node (seeing as a node might contain a city, some population information, etc.) rather than per province. Certain tricks can be used to actually do this on a province scale, but dole out the difference to each node respectively at certain intervals. It's not exactly trivial, but it is doable and would lower the performance hit.

The node difference is only truly important when a province changes shape. Something both events and the player should be able to initiate.

That latest video of "Ask Paradox Anything" just reminded me of a question that I keep forgetting to ask. Why is Fredrik Wester so damn good looking. Seems like a weird question (even more so due to me being a dude) but It always made me curious, I always thought CEOs were supposed to be grouchy old men.

That latest video of "Ask Paradox Anything" just reminded me of a question that I keep forgetting to ask. Why is Fredrik Wester so damn good looking. Seems like a weird question (even more so due to me being a dude) but It always made me curious, I always thought CEOs were supposed to be grouchy old men.

Why does Paradox toy with my mind?

Just like all Hollywood actors I have a body double who is doing my media presentations :)

It has been said that I did a good job on the Darkest Hour manual.
It has been "on my mind" for a while, to ask you, would you give me the honour of doing the Magna Mundi game manual.

Why would I want to do the Magna Mundi manual?
Well, it would give me an opportunity to let my creativity blossom, just thinking of the typography possibilities, artwork possibilities, layout possibilities.. yes my heart skips a beat!

So, if I'm not unknowingly walking on someone else's toes, I mean if Paradox have already organised someone else to do it...
Can I please ask you: "Can I do it, it would be an honour!"
