Actually I couldn't bother to annex them it would mean dealing with skyrocketing stab costs and wrong-religion wrong-cultured provinces... Since I'm maximally innovative that sort of sucks.

I know but like, what's the point? I'll just be stuck with a bunch of pagan provinces for all eternity (full innovative + confucian = no missionaries) I'm already richer tahn what's healthy for me BTW:
OK, so the initial revolts weren't so bad? But in 1644 you really got into trouble? Just trying to take notes in case I'm ever foolish enough to play China.

Evil swedish oppressors I think, they were there when I discovered europe in the 1500's IIRC.

Ugh, actually it seems like the Chinese events are weird: You actually *win* on letting the Manchu be independent in 1644. I have no problems against fighting 20 years of +20 revoltrisk, but there doesen't seem to be any reward in the end (no Babur, no great monarchs etc. etc.) in fact, Manchu culture is gained if the Manchu are independent... I'm actually considering reloading an earlier savegame and just replaying the last 30 years...

The revolts that hit China were harsh indeed, for twenty years the fires of rebellion were lit and the armies of warlords marched across the countrised, it was all the Emperor could do to keep the Empire from collapsing altogether, however, in the end he succeeded: Although the Manchu went their own path the rest of the Empire remained intact, or was even added to, as the Aztecs and (briefly) the tibetans joined the Empire.
At this period in time, after the Great War, China was preparing itself for what it knew must come: A showdown with the Manchu.

In the early 18th century yet more attacks were launched, Gujarat, Mysore and Afghanistan were all vassalized, as was Orissa. Scotland was conquered but lost in a war against England in the 1720's, the victorious english quickly declared themselves to be "britons" and changed their flag.
In the arly 1700's a chinese scientist informed the emperor that the chinese had reach the top of all possibly trading technologies: There was simply nothing left to research, they also estimated that the same could be said of infrastructural improvements in around 1741. Analysts predicted that afterwards the chinese would be forced to either invest massively in the army or in the navy. Opinions were divided about which to invest in.

Well done Arilou. I never had the patience to play China. Too many revolts for my liking but you’ve handled them with little difficulty. Looking forward to more.

Arilou, I've been hoping to see a China AAR one of these days. But to see a China AAR sprinkled with references to my other favorite game of all time... well, it's just too much. The other nations around are lucky that the Kzer-Za are in charge now in stead of the Kohr-Ah. I'm guessing that the Kohr-Ah would have wiped them all off the map in stead of just vassalizing them.
You would have had a much easier time in the Chinese revolts if you had kept a one-province Manchu around. The 1644 event is a lot more harsh if the Manchu don't exist. Still, this way you had an exciting time trying to get your old empire back - helping the Mings roar back to life.

Now, China in the 1700's was an economic and political juggernaught, not only had the Mughals finally been (once again) brought into line by chinese troops in the 1740's, the Chinese had also recieved news of the french, that had claimed the title of most splendid empire on earth, completely disregarding the Middle Kingdom. This did not sit well with the Son of Heaven, and thus he dispatched forces to invade the perfidious french: Taking the long and ardous trek from Shangai to the Austrian Netherlands, these reinforcements were sent to do: And to die, no matter the cost, no matter hte sacrifice, the french were going down.
Coinciding with severe revolts all over France (that among other things led to the liberation of Loisiana and Greece and the defection of several provinces to Austria and Spain) the ultimatum from the chinese overlords arrived: The ultimatum was as follows:

The french considered their options, then went for their muskets, unfortunately 150,000 chinese has a way of imposing their way of seeing things, combined with the dreadful revolts this made the french see reason, vassalization was after all preferable to death...
Now this was not the end of Chinese expansion in Europe, another invasion-fleet with more than 100,000 chinese had been en-route to France: Instead of landing in the newly-acquired province of Calais they set sail for England, the english war was if possible even shorter than the french one, the new technology of Leveé-en-masse made the chinese unbeatable, and after having assaulted their way from Cardiff to London the british government saw no other option than to surrender, becoming vassals of the chinese empire.

In the middle of this war an english Lord, by the name of Macaurtney, arrived in Nanjing, begging and pleading to let the english trade for technology with their obviously superior chinese overlords: The emperor of course let him do that, in private even expressing his views that there might even be things the men of the Middle Kingdom might learn from the british.
A second war with the french (who had treacherously broken their vassalship) was interrupted by the White Lotus rebellion, an annoying bunch that were quickly crushed by the Emperor's armies: France was also returned to the fold.
