As VICTORIA 3 (and Paradox games in general) doesn't show the poles it should use a Equirectangular projection map [Petition to the dev team]

Option to flip the map so the south is at the top or we riot.

Also: the Americas on the right of the map.

Id like to be able to rotate the map and lock it into view, would be nice for taller countries like italy and sweden screen area wise.

Extra fancy would be saving it in a control groups like views in 3d modelling programs.

I like flipping the map in war games(company of heroes, iron harvest comes to mind) so Id have my enemy to the north always.

If you seriously increased the system requirements of the game all the way into what is, say, average but not crazy or top of the line, for AAA titles these days, you could do some wild stuff. I'm talking google-earth style globe with overlays, the works.

However, i get the impression Paradox, for better and for worse, want these games to run on toasters if they can.
I think they're actually offloading a lot of non-graphics stuff from the CPU to the GPU these days. The CK3 requirements weren't 'laptop with integrated graphics' level.

You’re right that there is no conformal, equal-area projection of a sphere onto a plane. You could, however, display a globe, or something like a stereographic projection around the center of the viewport, where whatever you’re actually looking at will have minimal distortion. The downside is that the GPU would have to work a little harder. And also, using maps that look like the ones in the period could help make the game immersive.
I'm personally quite disappointed that they didn't go for a globe, but the OP was specifically saying he wanted an equirectangular projection. I'm disputing the logic of the arguments, not the correctness of the conclusion :)

In real proportions, Florida is the size of Britain. That would either mean small provinces in Europe and large ones in the United States or too many provinces in the US.

I think it would be useful if you told about this in more detail. The globe is such a common suggestion for every game, I think a lot of people are curious to know the downsides of it. Obviously it requires reworking the engine on quite a deep level, but putting that aside (let's say you're coding a new engine from scratch for the sake of argument), what are some downsides?
All math on the surface of a globe is much more complicated than that of math on a flat plane.
