As a muslim ruler can you start a Jihad?

I'm the Aftasid emperor and I want to do a Jihad but 1) No one ever calls a Jihad and 2) I have no idea if I can start one or what... thoughts?

You can't jihad before 1187 with the latest patch. And unless you have one of the caliphal titles, you can't call a jihad yourself.

How does one get a caliphal title(s)? I'm assuming you get it by having land in the east?

You must first destroy it, and then you can create it. I forget the conditions though.

I don't think you can destroy it unless you have it in the first place though so... I believe the only ways to acquire it are:

1. Start as a character in the Caliph's dynasty and acquire it by inheritance.
2. Hope that the AI Caliph destroys it (happened to me once) and then create it yourself (requires lots of Piety and possibly marrying into the Sayyid line).

If the current Caliph loses all of his land, the title is destroyed, so the easiest way is usually to war him for his land and then create it yourself.

You must be a sayyid or mirza, and sunni or shia (depending on which caliphate). Then find a way to kill every heir to the title and then its current holder. Then it should pop up under titles that can be created.

Also on a flavorful side-note, you don't need to be muslim to inherit the caliphate. I played a game as Khiva, where I was becoming Zoroastrian. But while I was still muslim, I had a chance to create the Caliphate. So I did, and then granted the title to Zoroastrian son, who remained the Sunni Caliph for 50 years, until his son, etc...
