The combat system of EU IV is very abstract, I know, but I think there are some odd outcomes that my suggestion could improve.
First of all, currently, artillery always hits the regiment it was aiming at. 100% accurate, no way to reach the enemy artillery, 50% defense bonus to own infantry. Well, especially early cannons were siege weapons, and to reliably hit a target, it would have had to basically stand still in front of the cannon.
Better representation of artillery would be if their shots would scatter over the enemy lines. A possible way to do that would be to give them half the damage they currently deal to the unit they are aiming at, while the remaining 50% of the damage are evenly spread over all units within (flanking) range. Possibly even the artillery ranks, to get at least some artillery damage in battles as long as both sides have artillery.
